If the top part of the cartridge is inverted, it is not purely a Game Boy Color game (hence the reason why Pokémon Gold and Silver work on GB).

If the top part of the cartridge isn't inverted, it will only work on Game Boy Colors or Game Boy Advances.

some gameboy color games will work with a gameboy pocket
usually the box will say for most of the earlier gbc games
