I currently own a PS2 and to be honest it's giving me all my gaming desires (for now), but even then I would never turn down the opportunity of playing on another console after my recent experience.

I didn't really think highly of Nintendo's GameCube, that was until I played it and recognised. It's smart, compact and it has a lot of good games. I was shocked by how good it performed and since then I've found myself wanting to play different material on other consoles.

I haven't played the Xbox yet, but even with the rumours about it not being such a good console, I wouldn't judge it until I play it. So why do people still find it necessary to undermine other games and console developers?

Well, from experience I know the answer. It's because of competition, which is highly emphasised and encouraged by today's media. In magazines, they often compare one game company's console or game to another, which channels opinions and thoughts into our heads. And no-one seems to notice that the article is actually someone elses opinion, so really gamer's opinions are a result of a chain reaction because when you read articles of other people's opinions, you tend to think they're right because the magazine has the best insight to the industry, but that really isn't true. That's how the whole console wars conspiracy began. All because of what people think, but does it really matter?

Why are there so many dedicated fans that reap pleasure from mocking other consoles? When the Xbox came out, it must have received the most abuse I've ever witnessed for a console, simply because it was Bill Gates' (Microsoft billionaire) first ever console. This being a very intelligent man who could propel the future of gaming to greater things. I think he can and WILL do it. After the Xbox settled in, all the mocking died down, and people got used to its "huge" and "chunky" appearance and those that participated in it also found themselves owning one. If anyone's the main contender for doing the best in the industry, it's probably Microsoft. They seem to be getting a lot of the decent games as a result of gathering a lot of decent developers. They've got their huge Xbox Live project in line, which merely mames Sony.

When Sony released the PS2, they boasted so much about their online capabilities that are "soon" to come. It's now been three years, and still no answer! Yeah, okay Japan may have it, but that's no use to the rest and majority of the world is it? Now, Xbox are ready and set to launch their online frenzy after just a number of months of release, and even Nintendo are getting ready to go online, which simply shames Sony and disappoints its fans.

Nintendo are also a strong company that seem to have their heads screwed on. The new Gameboy Advance, set for a march 2003 launch, looks to be very promising. I was immediately fascinated by their WaveBird pad as well as their whole console layout. Mini discs? Memory Card? GBA Plug-in capability? Nintendo are fantastic! I was once amongst the Nintendo mockers, even though I had previously played and adored Mario and all that on the NES/Snes, but now I absolutely adore the company! They seem to have the right idea of what the gaming public expect from games, I mean just take a look at Pikmin. You could just glance at it, and wrongly judge it by its cover, or instead play it and discover what a hugely enjoyable game it is! The same goes for the rest of Nintendo's range of acclaimed games for toddlers; play them and you'll find yourself chewing on your own tongue, regretting maming them in the past.

I don't know if it's because of Sony's recent fall in progression in the industry or lack of any new things for its PS2 that's made me have a totally refreshing view of the rest of the competition. Sure, it may still be selling shell loads around the world, but if they don't give their regulars something other than games for its console, the name "Sony" won't draw the crowds in anymore because at the end of the day people buy consoles with the expectation that it has a bright future. And right the PS2 isn't showing any proof of that. But there's still hope with talk of the PS3's capabilities and all that, but we don't want to wait another five years for that? I don't know if Sony's got something hidden up their sleeves for the PS2 or something, but they need to keep up with the competition and quick!

When rumours were flowing that the PS2 was a rushed console, I simply ignored them. Now, I'm thinking straight, thinking differently, after being impressed by the GameCube and Xbox. Nintendo and Microsoft seemed to have planned their future much better, Microsoft have already hinted an Xbox 2! I feel like an idiot at the moment because I have one of the consoles that seems to be going nowhere whilst others (the lucky ones) bought the two consoles that are now showing true potential in their works. Not to mention Nintendo's consistency in dishing out decent games. Where the Xbox beats the PS2 here is that it may not have a consistant amount of decent games like the GameCube, but it certainly receives a lot more games than the PS2, so consistency isn't a matter for them.

That is why there should be no future of maming.

You still don't know why?

Put it this way, you may end up looking the fool.

The Xbox and Gamecube are superior to the PS2 in many ways, but when you consider the 1.5 year gap between them, the PS2 isn't doing too badly considering.

Still, it's not so much about power as it is about the games.
Nintendo have always had a flair for making clever games.
All my friends would say how crap Pikmin looked and then play it and be hooked.

MS have been making software for a long time - most companies use their software for games devellopment - not to mention their expertise on Networks - MSN et al - so that gives them their own specialty too.

Thanks Mate

The GameCube is a very good console from what I've experienced of it. You should get a purple one, and I would strongly recommend Mario Party 4, or if you like FPSs get Die Hard: Vendetta.

Yeah, I'm still looking for the opportunity.

My mate who lives near me told his little brother got one for Christmas, so I'm thinking of going round tomorrow. I haven't that the chance to lately.

Cheers for the reply!
