It did cross my mind, like you say it's not worth losing all those hours of work for an extra tenner or so.
As a general rule, never buy anything but official memory cards for your PS2. Yes, they're expensive - but they're worth it. Third-party cards for both PSone and PS2 have reputations for being notoriously unreliable, and losing all data held on them.
