Mario could be seen as the biggest games character ever, he’s been around for longer then a good decade and that’s longer then any other games character I know.

Lara Croft? Bah, she’s young in gaming years.

That old guy in Harry Potter? He’s even younger.

Sonic? Nope, Mario’s older but Sonic still needs a walking stick.

After completing Super Mario Sunshine I felt like it was probably the worse Mario game I’ve ever played. It came to mind that maybe Nintendo are over using him and soon he’ll just be a distant Hero of the gaming world leaving another character to take his role. The effects can be seen already, for instance:

Put these games in order of how much you looked/are looking forward to them:

Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Mario 128.

The order I would put them all in is both Mario games at the back with Metroid Prime following and then Zelda first. Post me your results of that and I think we could see some similarities in Mario not being as popular as he should.

My guess for the person who takes Mario’s role as a mascot? It’s got to be Link. You hyped him up on the Nintendo 64 and many said it was the best game they’ve ever played, you now hype the next game bigger then any other before. Has any of Links games ever been a big disappointment? Not in my eyes.

My view on it is that Nintendo release too many games with the name ‘Mario’ in them. We’ve got Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Party, Mario Kart and now Nintendo are even releasing SNES style Mario games on the Gameboy Advance. And you thought four updates of Tony Hawks was too much…

*Puts up hands*

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Mario games mainly because they have lots of Nintendo magic in them but at times I feel sorry for the poor fella who’s future could be doomed because Nintendo see him as a money maker. No doubt certain people will still go out and buy the games though leaving Mario being in sequel after sequel of games like Mario Kart. So he’s going to be the Granny of the gaming world in the sense of age and the number of games he’s been in so lets take a look at his future.

The year is 2050 – everyone has Skateboards with no wheels and Cars don’t work on the ground anymore. It’s May, a new Nintendo console has just been released, it’s called the Nintendo Marioman. It is in the shape of a Mario himself following 50% of Nintendo’s games being about him meaning that at least one of them was good. Here is a preview of the launch games for the Nintendo Granniothing.

Super Grannio Kart : I’ll Race You For Some Fish
Here we have a game two months in the making which sees you playing Grannio (duh) against his Granny friends. Instead of racing for cups you now race for Fish which is every Granny’s favourite dish. Also on the plate is some traditional Fish and Chips instead of the Cyber-Sachets you now get. New weapons in the game include ‘Bad Breath Squirter’ now available on more characters other then Bowser and ‘Moosh Wipe’ where you can clean your own Moosh with your own spit for no reason at all. Super Grannio Kart has all your favourite Nintendo characters you’ve now been playing for too many years.

Grannio Tennis 15 : This Is How We Use To Play Sport
In this edition Mario has had a beard cut and now go’s for spikes. Nintendo recently said “We felt this would make the game sell more to the youth out there”. When told of this the youths replied “Who the hell wants to play Granny Tennis anyway?!?”, many Parents agreed. New levels for this update are a Seaside court and a tournament held in Butlins. To this the youths replied “What the hell is Butlins?!?”. Nintendo have also announced that tracks by Linkin Park will be featured in the game. To this the youths replied “What the hell is a Linkin Park?!?” and the parents replied “Who the hells wants to listen to Linkin Park?!?”. The game is set to be a big hit.

Grannio Party 36 : Let’s Get Funky
Set to be Nintendo’s biggest seller this Summer is Granny Party 36: Let’s Get Funky which features all your favourite Nintendo characters in a board game for the Thirty Sixth time. Music from top groups from the 90’s are now featured and a Dance Tap can be plugged in to get groovy on your fingers. “I can now exercise my fingers whilst playing a video game” said Mr. Smith from London City. He is telling the truth and this isn’t no scam, you can now have frequent blood being transported to your fingers for a longer time without them conking out and not working just by playing Granny Party 36 : Lets Get Funky. Oh and of course the game features 30 of the biggest Nintendo characters including Grannio himself.

Super Grannio Rainy Day : Bad Weather We’re Having Today
Grannio is now in his biggest game yet and is fully VR compatible. In this game you have to walk to the local store to buy a newspaper whilst it rains and then try and make it back home to tell the storys of how you nearly got mugged and how bad the weather is outside. Sounds easy? Well no, because you move at a speed of 1mph only armed with a walking stick and an umbrella. Every raindrop that hits you makes you lose a life and you get five life’s in total. Here’s what our playtester 69 year old Maureen, had to say about the game – “It’s so addictive that now I don’t worry about going to the shop myself anymore. There was this one time I was playing the game and I found a retro style looking wheelchair in a corner, so as you do I got on it and I went at 3mph! Talk about speed!” She enjoyed it, so should you.

Super Mario Sunshine
This game was first released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube and it features Grannio as a little boy being kept on an island for something he didn’t do. “Why didn’t he just teleport it?” says 13 year old Doug from Wales. In the game Mario (as he was known then) hovers by using water to keep him up and is also lifted off the ground in a rocket like way using the same device. “Why do I need to play this game when I can do that in real life without water?” Said 13 year old Doug from Wales. Well Doug, you must buy it because it has Mario in it. “Ok” said 13 year old Doug from Wales. When asked what he thought about the Nintendo GameCube he said “Why didn’t they just call it the Nintendo GrannioCube?”, well Doug, he wasn’t a Granny then and don’t worry, your Mum is sure to love it.

From what I read on here and around the web alot it seems that Zelda is more popular then Mario these days.

I think it's probably because of Mario always nearly being a launch game and Zelda always follows which keeps the hype up for it. With the launch of the GameCube though it was a different story. Luigi's Mansion took Marios place for the main launch game and we were left waiting for Mario. You would think this would cause everyone to get a bit more excited about the new Mario game but I never felt it. And then when I compelted the game I was like "oh".

Here's my results:

1. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
2. Metroid Prime
3. Mario SunShine
4. Mario 128

I think that Mario SunShine would be higher-up had I not yet played and completed this game; if it was scheduled for release closer to both Zelda and Metroid. As for Mario 128, I don't really know anything about this game, so I can't really put it any higher.
If I hadn't played Mario SunShine already, then it'd probably be top - that's the way it goes for me with Nintendo.
Metroid Prime seems very-impressive, but we've seen a lot-less of it compared to Zelda and Mario, so these 2 will always be above Samus Aran as because I simply know what they are like from experience.
Sadly, I've never had the priveledge to play a Metroid game before. :(

And as for the whole mascot thing, it will always be Mario, whether he remains to be recognised in another 10-years-time or not, that is something that Nintendo will never change.
But with the growing popularity of RPG's over platform games I can see a good chance that the Zelda series will one-day (perhaps very-soon...?) over-take the Super Mario series as what Nintendo are known-for best.

I already know a lot of people who are already into Zelda more than Mario from their past experiences with the N64 and Super Nintendo, and they don't even want to give Mario SunShine a look-in with the new Zelda on-the-way!
