Chris Benoit is the best wrestler in the WWF. I can't wait to his return and challenge for the title which inexplicably he has never won. Jericho and Angle will only look good until he comes back. I don't care if he's heel or face he's still a great wrestler.

Wow Cheese. That's pretty damn good. I just looked at and thougt, 'well this'll be a long one to arhue with.' But who'd have thought that I would agree with every single word you just said? Not me I can assure you! I was hoping to see Bossman and Tazz up there on that list, and a bit about Kurt Angle, but I sill agree with everything you said so, what's there more to say than, well, Rock On!!

I'm Tazz.

This last year, there has been just one thing keeping me tuning in to the WWF.

The workers.

No matter how dull the storylines, no matter how faded the ideas, there's a good handful of guys in today's WWF who swim against the tide and strive for personal excellence with respect to this business; those are the guys who have held the company together since the last Wrestlemania.

Through the last twenty years of wrestling, "smart" fans like us have kept our eyes on the stagnant ladders of elevation for the best talent; the Owen Harts, the Brian Pillmans, the Curt Hennigs, the Ricky Steamboats, the Rick Rudes, the Arn Andersons, and many more. By and large, the best talents in each promotion never make it to the top of the card - the biggest egos do. While there are a handful of exceptions, such as Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart, the vast majority of headliners in recent history have been slugs like Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, Dusty Rhodes, or Lex Luger. In the long term, these guys hurt the business a whole lot more than they helped it. Yes, they drew money for a while - well, some of them drew money - but by the time their run on top was over, and their careers began to slide, they burned the promotion half to the ground with them. For those who say this business is cyclical, perhaps it's because most of those who headline it wouldn’t pass the torch to the next generation of headliners if their lives depended on it, and the lag time between the time the old stars are phased out and the new being built up is where business drops.

The bottom line is that hardcore wrestling fans have pretty much accepted that the WWF, like most North American companies, is generally represented by righteous self-promoters, who are far more concerned with their own lot than with the business at large. The workers, the guys who give a damn about how their match plays out, who care if they blow a spot, those guys by and large end up on the opening and mid-card matches. Most of them spend their whole careers toiling on the lower rungs of the ladder. That’s why most thought that today would never come.

Today, we have a new breed of headliners.

And they came to wrestle.

When else in WWF history has there been a crop of headliners like we do now? When in recent memory have the headliners actually turned up their efforts the higher they're elevated instead of using their success as an opportunity to slack off and ride the wave of success on name value ?

Steve Austin was taking such physical bumps during non-televised house shows last year that WWF management was concerned that he'd hurt himself. Talk about The Rock; The guy is a bona fide movie star, a main event fix, and one of the most charismatic entertainers in wrestling history. He has the size, the has the reputation, he has the stardom. The Rock could, if he chose to, work a style and handle business in a way that would make him the second coming of Hulk Hogan. But The Rock chooses not to be the second coming of Hulk Hogan. He chooses to be better.

Hogan isn't even in his league.

And yet, The Rock goes out each night and puts one hundred percent into every promo, wrestles longer, bumps harder, flies higher and plans and perfects every spot and every transition he puts together in that ring. The Rock doesn't need to do that; but yet, he does. And no matter how dull the storyline, or how repetitive the show, when Rock walks through that curtain, I turn up the television. I know that I'm going to see a real talent give it his best; for the love of the game.

What about Chris Jericho? After even I doubted whether he could take it to the next level this time last year, Y2J is showing the kind of raw ability that had critics pegging him as the next Ric Flair five years ago. His promos are out of this world, and between his dedication to his gimmick and the booking of his matches, for one of the few times in the last several decades, we have a champion who keeps us guessing. When his reign started, it was a token; yeah, time to push a new guy, Jericho's been around X amount of time, done X amount of jobs, so he's the transition guy. Jericho has always been the transition guy.

Not any more.

Now Chris Jericho is a main-event superstar.

Say it with me; until I wrote it just then, I don't think even I took a minute to look at how he's changed the way people look at him the last two months.

And don't forget, right around the corner we have Chris Benoit coming back. Don't even get me started on this man's talent, his ability, his selfless contributions to this business. Chris has worked his rear off for fifteen years, and remains one of the truest of true professionals in this business. He has earned the right to hold that ball, like Jericho did. He has earned the right to hold that ball, and run with it. Yeah, Chris Benoit isn't so hot on the microphone. Big deal. He sweats charisma - real charisma - and happens to be the greatest wrestler in North America today. Benoit isn’t The Rock, he isn't Steve Austin, and most importantly, he doesn't need to be. The truth is, all it takes is one decent storyline written for the character Benoit plays, the silent, violent assassin, and he'll be the next big thing. Perhaps anyone in the WWF who says any different is afraid of just how high he could really go in this business. Benoit has earned the right, he has earned the opportunity to carry the ball. He deserves it.

Actually, so does Steven Richards.

As does Tommy Dreamer.

Kidman deserves his shot. The Guerreros deserve their shot. Val Venis deserves his shot. Lance Storm deserves his shot. Edge deserves his shot. Booker deserves his shot. Rob Van Dam deserves his shot. DDP deserves another shot; like him or hate him, he's earned it, by going out there and flat-out working hard, by giving a damn about this business - and he's not alone.

You know who doesn't deserve a shot?

Nash doesn't deserve a shot.

Hall doesn't deserve a shot.

Hogan doesn't deserve a shot.

Before I begin bandwagoning, let me get something out of the way; I respect each guy perfectly well. I respect what Nash has accomplished. I respect the raw charisma and visual power of Hulk Hogan. I respect the work of Scott Hall, who is in my opinion, one of the most under-rated big-men workers in wrestling history.

But these guys had their chances. They won their titles. They headlined their shows. They were given the ball, and they chose to toss it in the river and go drinking. They chose not to give back to this business. To each their own. However, there's a lot of guys who took that ball and ran with it; there's a lot of guys who took that ball, and passed it on to the next man; and there's a lot of guys who have never had the chance to hold that ball at all.

Today in the WWF, the boys are working harder and wrestling better than ever before.

Perhaps there's a place on the card for Hogan's charisma; Nash's size, Hall's talent.

But that place is behind Kurt Angle, behind Triple-H, behind Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, The Rock and Steve Austin.

Their place is behind today’s stars, who have taken the WWF to places that the NWO never even bothered to try.

Hmm, when the WWF bought out WCW, I think it was Jim Ross who said something along the lines of :- WCW failed because it wasn't bringing enough young wrestkers through, it was just the same old star re-packaged.

Surely the WWF isn't going to wander blindly into doing the same thing? Well, they are if the nWo is what we all think it's going to be. Where's the imagination these days? The last thing we need is three old superstars who weren't that good first time around walking straight into the top of the federation when the likes of Kane, Big Show, Chris Benoit and Rob Van Dam should be at the top and aren't because Stone Cold, The Rock, Y2J , Undertaker and Triple H are still doing the same things at the top that they have for about the last five years. It's time to move on...
