Here are some of the games that were in development, but pulled out at the last minute before they were put on sale.
Midget Wars
From what I’ve heard this game was set to be very much like robot wars, but obviously with midgets to replace the robots. You get to pick one midget at the beginning that has basic weapons, i.e. a knife and a big stick, and only a helmet as armour. You have to build up your midget as you go along, earning money for each battle you win. You can use the money to buy weapon upgrades, better armour, and even small tanks towards the end of the game if you are good enough. If you want to you can even trade your midget in for a different one, but it’ll cost you and you will have to start from basics again with weapons, armour...etc. There is also a very good create-a-character option when you can create a midget and make him look like you want, facial hair, height, weight, clothes ...etc. It is a very friendly interface and easy to use. This would be a very popular game if it was released, with easy to use controls, lots of playability and a long life span. If you have some dodgy friends, i highly suggest you try and get your hands on a pirate copy, it’s well worth it and will keep you playing till your thumbs bleed or fall off.
Spank the monkey
This is a game very much like the old style tamagotchis, except much more advanced. You basically have to look after and bring up your very own pet monkey. In the start the monkey is only a ickle baby and you have to bring him up until he is full grown silverback gorilla. He goes through 270 different stages in life, ranging from obedient, to rampant wild animal. Depending on how you bring him up, he can grow up to be house trained and a lovable pet, or a nasty, mean beast hellbent on destroying your virtual house. The main form of discipline is to spank your monkey, hence the name, and partly the reason why it was never released. In my opinion, this is a very outdated game, and has limited playability. After the first few levels, it just get boring and ends up on the back of your shelf covered in dust. It was probably best that this game was never released, and if you ever get offered a copy, its not worth the 3 quid it’ll cost you.
Time Team - The Game
This is a game adapted from the highly successful TV programme you can find on channel 4 on a Sunday afternoon. If you are not familiar, it is about a group of archaeologists who go around the country digging up old stuff. The game is pretty much the same thing. You take control of one of the archaeologists of your choice, and go around the country with the Time Team and dig up and identify stuff. Throughout the game you have to master such techniques as your brushstroke, cleaning abilities and kneeling in dirt. You get more money the more relics you find and the more rare they are. You can use this money to buy better digging equipment, more geeky clothes and rubbish haircuts. This is a very challenging and intriguing game and can help you if you wish to grow up to be a geek or archaeologist. I don’t know why this game was never released and am greatly disappointed that I will never be able to marvel at its full glory.
Snail Racing
If you have ever raced snails as a kid, then you will know how great this game would have been had it been released. You have to train up your chosen snail on a diet of lettuce, plenty of training and not making them get run over by cars (which, lets face it, we’ve all done). A thoroughly challenging game, with every choice you make affecting how your snail does in the races, so you have to choose carefully. There is a book that would have accompanied that that gives you tips and hints on the best way to get your snail performing at his best. As you win more and more races you get progressively better prizes, ranging from a lettuce leaf, to a lifes supply of lettuce for your snail. What more could you ask for? I’m sure that this game would have done reasonably well had it been released, I would have bought a copy. Unfortunately they did not think that this would have attracted a big enough customer base for some reason. It is a great tragedy that none of you will ever experience it.
So there you have it the games that didn't make it to the shelfs in our beloved game shops and it looks like they never will be on the shelves sitting along side Great games such as the Tony Hawks series or Metal Gear Solid.
Oh yeh i have noticed some of you have got a little name under your name if you get what i mean how do i get one?
Another game is Thrill Kill, slightly more well known than the title above because it was fairly well hyped. It was a fighting game where you basically just ripped each other to shreds (A bit like WU-TANG: Taste the pain, but bloodier).
Does anyone remember a game where you played as this samurai type bloke and you ran around with a dog? It was originally destined for PSone, but for some reason it never made it. Shame because i wanted to play that...
Nice one, it's good to see a JAT posting some good stuff. Keep this up and you'll find yourself accepted rather than abused.
You see that newbies?
It's called a good post - proper words, proper sentances.
Once again, well done. I'll see you around
