The question is already set. WHO IS GOING TO BE THE LEADER IN THE NEXT GEN CONOLE INDUSTRY?
People have been flooding shops and taking the ps2 off the shelves, since its release, till today. Everybody was blown away by the mind-boggling graphics and game play the ps2 had to offer and considered reality a thing of the past. Not long after the release of the ps2 the rumours started spreading about the almighty console from Microsoft, the XBOX. Microsoft weren’t the only ones having rumours spread around about them, Nintendo also had a next gen console which was close to launch in Japan, this console was a revolution for Nintendo as it was the first console which had its games formatted on CD rather than the traditional Nintendo cartridge, the name given for the console was GAMECUBE.
The ps2 now had 2 fierce competitors, which were both giants in the industry. PS2 retaliated this threat with an amazing if not astonishing line up of games, from amazing racing games like GRAN TURISMO 3 to teasing demos of the eagerly awaited METAL GEAR SOLID 2. This almost guaranteed the success of the SONY PS2.
After a few successful months for the ps2 the fierce competitor Microsoft hit the U.S with its next gen console the XBOX. The hype before its launch really said everything about the console to the makers of it, not only did the console have astonishing graphics and speed which surpassed the ps2 but it also had a brilliant line up of games for its launch. The console also made the idea of broadband gaming possible, which Sony also had considered.
Now lets not forget our little friend the GAMECUBE, its launch in Japan was a mind blowing experience and for the first time ever the people in Japan were enjoying a game whose main character was a plumber who had been set aside for many years. With its launch Title of LUIGIS MANSION the GAMECUBE was a big hit in the east along with the SONY PS2.
Sony plans for broadband gaming came to reality; they announced that the sequel to the amazingly popular line of final fantasy games (FINAL FANTASY 11) would be an online only game!!!! With this they also announced that an additional ps2 package would be released with the launch of the game, which will include a hard drive and a broadband add-on. This launch is set for mid summer 2002. But then an astonishing announcement was made. Up until recently Sony had a set five-year plan for the PS2 but a recent announcement by the company president Kunitake Ando bought an end to this. He said that the XBOX is forcing Sony to release the playstation 3 (that’s right I said ps3) sooner that expected. Now if Sony consider the Microsoft machine, with its mind splitting specifications, a threat then what does this say about the Xbox?
This makes us all wonder what is going to happen in the near future. Will Microsoft retaliate with a sequel to the XBOX or will NINTENDO come in underestimated and take over the industry…my guess is that as time moves forward so does the technology so in that case…only time will tell my game friendly comrades.
