Graphics are impressive. Good graphics, I mean. But are good graphics all there is to make a videogame good? Some of the "best video games ever" are rated to be recent games that were released on the Ps2 or games that will be released on either the Xbox or Gamecube. Whenever a new console is released, and a good game comes out on it, it might be known as one of the "best video games ever", but it will only disappear again when a great game on a future console is released and takes the spotlight away from what was supposed to be one of the "best video games ever". In my opinion, the best games ever don’t die in this way. I’ll list what I think are some of the best games, that despite their terrible graphics and lack of any form of story are still brilliant.

Pong
Pac-man
Tetris

There is only one word to describe the graphics on these games. I believe the term is "crap". But despite the amazing graphics that have appeared on more recent videogames, they are no-where near as good games as the ones mentioned above (not that more recent games are rubbish, I do like them). The thing is, all modern games have copied other game or story, somehow, often in genre. You can surely relate one racing game to another, only because they both have the same genre. The early games haven’t copied anything (except the concept behind space invaders), and some have never been copied again as they never can. The ideas behind these games are genius, and provide a huge amount of entertainment.

Pong

The one that started it all. A simple idea that began video gaming as we know it, despite all the dissimilarities between modern games and this one. I did say that these games didn’t copy anything, but to start gaming off in the first place, some sort of idea had to be put into it. It follows the simple idea of a tennis match. There are two paddles on either side of a screen that each must try to get a ball past the opposite paddle. Unfortunately, a recent version of this game was released for the Game Boy Colour, but it was rubbish compared to the original. It contained modern modes of the game that are good ideas on paper, but rubbish in actual gameplay. The original of pong with that little joystick is irreplaceable – a masterpiece.

Pac-Man

Out of all retro games, this is my favourite one. It is one of a kind - absolutely brilliant. It’s not hard to follow the story. You play Pac-Man, a small yellow blob. You have to eat smaller blobs and fruit to get points, whilst running away from some ghosts. But, if you get a blob that is slightly bigger than the smallest blobs mentioned above, you can eat the ghosts for big points. There is nothing like this game, it is hard to copy it. Many different Pac-man games have released, and there isn’t a single best one, as they are all very enjoyable. One thing that is great about Pac-man is that no matter what format it is being played on, it is always a joy to play.

Tetris

The difference between Tetris and the games mentioned above, is that it was not released in the arcades, and is definitely not a retro game. This is because it began to be made in 1984 for the Game Boy, much later than the retro games shown above. But it’s style is similar to that of most puzzle retro games. It must be the most addictive game of all time that anyone can like – even my parents like it! The amount of different formats the many different versions of this game have been released on is huge - from game boys, to pcs, to sky digital. If I could have one game boy game with me on a desert island, then this would be it, as the fun can last for a very long time.

To me, these are the real games that go under the category of “best video games ever”. They are real video games. The ones (except for Tetris) that began an era. They all have ingenious ideas behind them. Those ideas make these games simple, addictive and fun.
