With Deus Ex about to release on the PS2 and with its massive success upon the PC, I strongly feel it is the future of gaming, I relised this after playing Deus Ex for ages then returning to Max Payne, one thing I realised is that Max Payne's graphics are phenominal however it epitimises linear gaming and when you want to go through a door and it is magically locked it wear thin. Deus EX always has more than one way of doing something be it Lockpicking a door, multitooling a lift of going through an air vent, each of the ways will mean something new for the gamer, also 3 endings means the game is re-playable, the amount of weapons quota also means that next time you play you can choose different weapons. The game is challenging and re-playable and for any game to survive in the modern games market it needs these qualities, Max Payne is only playable once. Unreal Tournament is another example of future gaming, because of its multiple game settings and randomness it makes the game avaiable to play when you dont want to get stuck into a previously saved game. GTA 1,2 and 3 also have the right idea, progressivly improving the graphics and sound but you can continue a saved game of just have a laugh by causing havoc. Games within the genre of The Sims are sort of timeless and the gameplay is already spot-on, the graphics and sound could be improved but due to the pick-up and put-down nature of the game it is a concept which can be used in the far future. Controvertially I think Half-Life is also too linear, not as much as Max Payne, but still fairly linear.
So to conclude, the future of gaming relies upon the games possibilities and whether it can be played once and then gather dust or whether you can play it over and over.
