Back in the olden days we had nintendo and sega dukeing it out to see who was the best,and the main set up fight was between mario and Sonic,to heavyweights in their catorgory but they also have one more thing important they are just as well known as the companies.When you say Sega they immmeadiately think ohhhhhh is that the one with the blue hedghog as they with nintendo,but with the playstation you missed that it has not a main character which enforces the power of the console,.for the playstation it had people like lara croft or crash bandicoot,none of which have reach super stardom like mario and sonic,maybe lara but no where near as much the other.The importance factors comes in to plat where each one represents there for the bring quality titles with them,mario had the 64 version and sega had sonics adventure which were both massive hits.....why?well everybody remmembers them,for all I kow they probably have a fan club.The next gen consoles out there than nintendos and segas have not yet got one,this could be their downfall,you can bet their will be a new mario game and there is already one being made for the Sega Dreamcast and hopefullt mant more as evrybody enjoys playing them,I know that microsoft have got that girl but is she spikey or a fat plumber who we both all love ,if they choose this does that represent Microsofts actions in the games industry,mean and aggrasive,In the future games characters will play an even bigger role than they did say 5 years ago.
Sounds like you been lookin' too hard boy! What have you been doing, playing Mario 64, bicking Bowser up by the tail, and pausing the game to have a good look? Maybe it's hidden in his/her shell and only comes out when aroused.........

Quantity rather than quality - Sony releases lots of games in the hope that noone notices that only one of them is good? (notice that question mark at the end)
The point I was trying *not* to make was that all Sony have been doing is flooding the market, hence lots of playstation games boxes on the shelf compared to N64 ones. I left it up to everyone else to suggest that quantity meant lack of quality - I knew someone would!
Dreamcast is my favorite console BTW, but that does not mean I favour Sega over everyone as a company.

Sony don't seem to need a mascot, they have their four little designs on the joypad buttons to sell their machine. (not that the amount of money, large corporation and tons of freebies/backhanders have got anything to do with making a machine popular, oh no!)
Marketing is everything in the console world and if the big N and Sega decide to do it with characters then they will, Sony, on the other hand, believes in quantity and will just fill the market up with enough games chracters until it bursts.
