I wouldn't mind learning more about how these work, so could anyone fill me in??

What type of software is used, how secure it really is, how it is incorporated within a Web Site and how much it costs???

I have been given to chance for a 14 day trial of a SSL Certificate thingy, and would like to see how it all works

And would ther be any chance of using it on my Freeola Space??

Thanx :o).

As Rob said, an SSL module, but you'll need a dedicated Firewall too.

Software + Development + Hardware... initally expensive, but once up, fairly cheap to add to other sites. You will still need soem form of verification from people like Verisign to gurantee your security.

No, I think they just enable the SSL module in Apache and set up a new virtual host, but I'm not sure. That really is one for Bob, but I doubt it requires more boxen.

Thats it??? Cool, thanx Rob :o)

I was expecting it to be more complicated than that.

But guess that means SSL on our Freeola space is out then, seeing as they probably won't want to spend any more cash on another server for it's use.

You don't "use" it it just happens. As long as SSL is activated it's encrypted.

AFAIK I know it's dead-simple. All you need is a secure server, and as long as the pages are on the server with the https:// protocol, biff-bam-bosh it's done.
