The point of consoles? They’re a games playing devise that don't come with the technical problems the PC has. You don't have to install games, you don't have to worry about you're games crashing mid way through and you don't have to constantly worry about you're specifications and whether you can run a game or not.
Of course, being more of a PC gamer, I can easily forgive relatively minor problems like that, but not everyone does, so consoles prove to be a great alternative to the problems of PC gaming.
Another point of consoles, their games. You say console games will eventually get ported to the PC anyway, and in most cases that is true, but not all games find their way to PC gamers. I have 2 consoles as well as a PC, and the reason for that is because I'll get the best range of games from 3 different systems instead of just one.
Their are some amazing games on the consoles, games like Resident Evil, Super Smash Bros, Timesplitters 2, Devil May Cry, Ico, SSX ect... that can't be found on the PC. Their are also some genre's that console do better, such as driving simulators, platform adventures and beat em ups, which have made an appearance on the PC before, but never really make as big an impression as their console counterparts.
Having owned 2 consoles for some time now, I'd say there is a significant point to owning both a console and a PC. They both provide unique gaming experiences that the other can't provide.
