Forlan recently completed his move to United from Indipendiente for £6.9m after rejecting the move to Middelsbrough. The good news is that he is an international striker who can score goals and can even speak good English! But the problem is nobody knows who he is! Many people have now come to doubt Fergie over this signing, but it is not the first time that he's been critisized for his moves in the transfer market this season.
Selling Stam may be the biggest mistake, but he had his reasons. How can you expect your team to work well together with a team-mate who publically critisizes them?? And soon after his move to Lazio, Stam was banned for testing positive for Nandrolone! So it was the right descision, even if he is world-class.
Laurent Blanc was signed as Stam's replacement, for free! Ansd due to his age (36) many people believed that the former world-cup winning captain with France, didn't have what it takes to keep the United back-line going strong. But since then the critics have been proven 'wrong' and Blanc has showed that he is worth more than a free transfer!! Even if he will retire at the end of the season, his signing has proven to be a good descision by Fergie. Even of it all started badly!
United spent a record-breaking £50m over the summer on just 3 players! Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan-Séba Veron, and Roy Carrol. For £19m, van Nistelrooy has proven to be a real bargin! Especially after setting a new Premiership record of 8 goals in 8 games straight!! But that record sad;y ended last night. Aswell as that, he's keeping his own targets, and his set his sights on top-scorer in the league this season! Who says he can't achieve it???
Veron may have cost an astonishing £28.1m, but he has hardly shown the form of the world-class player he has proven himself to be. He started quite well, scoring a few goals, but has since then failed to show the form he was clearly capable of at Lazio. Fergie has been critisized for the signing, as all it's seemed to do is un-settle United's team and perofrmace in the league, despite Veron's abillity. There are also rumours that things are not alright between him and David Beckham, which could increase the chances of him leaving this summer. I personally didn't see any reason for his signing, and do not see what he has added to the team that makes them that 'extra bit even more special'! So if Fergie has made one bad descision this season, besides the tactics, it could be the signing of Veron.
Had you even heard of Roy Carrol before the start of this season?? No. He was one of Wigan's most valuable players, and was a bargain at £2m! People have said that he may not be 'top-understudy material' but he has since proven them wrong with a number of good performances in important games! It was predicted that Carrol would be Fergie's 'big mistake' this season, but he's since proven the critics wrong. What can stope him from being a future United no.1???
So there you see that Fergie hasn't made a c***-up with moeny this season. But what about the past??
Peter Schmeichel could hardly be called 'well-known world-wide' when United signed him all those years ago. And look at what a success he became to be!! Who says that the same can't be said for Diego Forlan?? He's already proven he can score in Argentina, but maybe he's been critisized due to the lack of interest from other big European clubs??
Massimo Taibi is probably the worst signing Fergie has ever made at United, espacially after 'that goal'! He was signed for around £4m along with Silvestre, who has proven himself to be a top-quality left-back! But what if Taibi hadn't made that mistake, or had been forgiven and stayed at the club?? He may now have been in with a chance as being one of the 23-men in Italy's world-cup squad!! To me, he had the potential! And I feel that he should have been let-off for that ONE mistake.
But to me, even though he was signed on-loan, French defender Willian Prunier has to be Alex Ferguson's biggest mistake in the transfer market! What did he add to the defence?? Nothing. With him in amongst the rest, we were on the wrong end of 4-0 against Spurs, and he was no-where near to the abillities of Pallister or Bruce! We may have won the championship that little bit easier if he hadn't arrived!
So new signings like Diego Forlan deserve to be given a real chance, not just 4/5 games like Taibi! You never know, he could be the next best thing, and Barcelona took no interest in him!! I think Fulham and co. will be very dissapointed that they passed their chance, once they've seen what he's capable of! And anyway, if he does turn out to be a big mistake, at least Fergie'll be gone by next season! And a new man will be incharge to put things straight!!
