Just think back to the 8-bit SNES, a good console with loadsa surprisingly playable games.
Back then we could only dream about today’s consoles but now it’s a reality.
We have loads of different kinds of consoles, from the weird to the wonderful you name it we have it.
First we were dreaming about today and now we’re dreaming about tomorrow.
But let’s take a look at the present and see what we treasure and what we might treasure in the furue.
The N64 I’m sure will be treasured for a long long time.
Sadly it’s slowly withering away but we will have some great games to remember it by.
Goldeneye is one of them.
Goldeneye used every inch of the N64’s awesome power.
Ok so it’s not quite so awesome now but in it’s glory days it was the best console around, just like the GameCube is now.
Something else that has given us a lot of joy is the Sony Playstation.
Ok it’s not quite as powerful as the N64 but… the vast majority of the Psone games have better gameplay than the N64’s cart based games.
Take Driver for example a great game with loads of options, cars to nick, and other vehicles to ram into.
It’s considered to be one of the best driving games around.
As well as being released on the Playstation it’s out on PC too!
But something I think that will change gaming forever is the Microsoft X-box.
It’s more powerful than some PC’s.
Hell it even has it’s own 8 gigabyte hard drive not to mention it’s Internet capability’s allowing for some spectacular online gaming.
This is going to be one awesome console.
Even now months before it’s arrival date the X-box already has a large handful of games that are sure to be dubbed classics.
Halo will more than likely be one of them.
So that’s something to look forward to.
But what else can we get our paws on in the near future?
The GameCube is almost upon us.
With it’s super powerful processors the GameCube is sure to be a world-wide phenomenon.
The GameCube has got Ninty’s all over the world going barmy for this super natural console, even some Non-Ninty’s are going nuts for one.
Even though it’s more powerful than the playstation2 the GameCube is being what I think is fairly priced at around £199.99 and the games are fairly cheap too.
It’s almost a budget console.
There’s something that’s had even more hype surrounding it than the GameCube and The Xbox.
Would you like to guess or shall I just tell you?
All right then I’ll tell you.
The SonyPlaystation2 (The Ps2) is the most sought after console ever.
Within the first month of launch the PS2 sold out across the whole of the UK, despite the hefty price tag of the PS2.
Hardly surprising after the huge success of the Sony’s last console.
The PS2 is currently still the best selling console on the market.
The games start at around £20.00 a fair price considering the overwhelming popularity of the PS2.
Even though we have some of the best consoles that mankind could wish for we still can’t stop ourselves from making newer better consoles.
Maybe if we stopped just for a minute we can appreciate how good the Future of gaming has been to us.
We might even learn something!
Thanks for reading!
So now, in the 128bit age, developers are forced to make games with great graphics to appease the masses- and that detters form gameplay.
Sonic
Anyway, the Playstation and N64 will never be treasured in the same way that the Snes is being treasured now.
Why not?
Let me explain.
Think of all Snes games. Mostly 2D, yes?
How many great 2D games were on the N64?
Very, very few.
The N64 didn't make the Snes obselete but took gaming into full 3D instead.
Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid...
The N64 never made games that were better than these.
Please note: I am NOT saying that Snes games are better than N64 games. What I'm saying is, it's like comparing ISS to Monkey Ball and wondering which one's better - they're completely different styles and therefore incomparable.
So the N64 never came out with a 2D platformer that beat these.
That's why the Snes is still special. It has the kind of games you don't see in the modern 3D market.
The Playstation and N64, however, are based around 3D technology. All their top games (more or less... there are always some exceptions like Worms and Smash Brothers) are in 3D.
The Gamecube and PS2 are also in 3D.
Basically, N64/PS do 3D but the PS2/GC do it better.
The N64 to GC transition is similar to the Nes to Snes.
Similar style only with more power to play with and deepen the games.
A Snes to N64 transition would be more comparable to a GC to Virtual Reality step. Although there'd be a step up in technology, virtual reality games would likely be so different to the old fashioned "viewed from a television" Gamecube games that you'd come back to the Gamecube every now and then for a retro experience when games were done in a different way.
For a Gamecube owner, a retro experience with N64 is when games weren't as good or advanced.
That's why the Snes and MegaDrive are still well loved.
Their were the peak of the 16bit era when 2D games reached their peak.
I suppose the PSone does have some uniqueness about it though.
Along with the Saturn, it's early days were the transformation between 2D and full 3D (which finally came through with the N64.).
There were 2D gameplay titles with 3D visuals (Pandemonium on the platforming front and Virtua Fighter/Tekken for beat-em-ups), and semi-3D titles that mixed elements from both (like Crash Bandicoot).
Crash Bandicoot is the closest that Donkey Kong Country had to a 3D update.
It was spiced up by being semi 3D but played very much like Donkey Country in many respects.
Donkey Kong 64 bore little reseblence to it's 16bit forebearer in terms of gameplay and style and was a bit of a mess.
I'd like to see the next Donkey Kong platformer in semi 3D like Crash. It'll keep the classic platforming elements (something that modern games just don't have anymore!), but use the third dimension to give it more scope.
The game should consist of a Mario World style map with 100's of A-B levels (which must be crammed with so many secrets and designed in such a way that it doesn't SEEM so linear), which range from easy at the begining to seriously difficult at the end.
There should be Candy Save points dotted around at certain places so you can only save your game after completing so many levels.
THAT would be a faithful update of the wonderful Donkey Kong Country on the Snes, and despite the state-of-the-art Gamecube graphics, the gameplay would bring nostalgic tears to an aged gamer's face.
Rareware please take note.
I've sort of drifted from the point so I'll shut up now...
Sorry about that please ingore SNES and think NES instead.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!
I hope ya'll enjoyed it!
