In a landmark development for the gaming community, a gamer called 'FantasyMeister' has submitted a lawsuit against RPG developer SquareSoft for the resulting Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following the death of Aeris during a playing of Final Fantasy VII in 1998.

FantasyMeister, or 'FM' for short, claims that this event had such a profound effect on him that he was forced to play the game many times to try to find a way to bring this character back to life, but to no avail. Since then, he has been committed to playing SquareSoft RPGs, always in the forlorn hope that Aeris is, somehow, 'out there somewhere'.

His subsequent actions led to him becoming more and more remote from his family unit, despite their pleas for him to leave his room from time to time. Damning evidence was provided by his mother, who told us:

"At least the PS2 boxes are thinner, we can slide them under his door much more easily than the old PSX cases."

The whole case was brought to light by the reappearance of 'Aerith' in the Disney/SquareSoft collaboration, Kingdom Hearts. FM had decided that perhaps 5 years of mourning was enough, and was ready to give up the ghost of his beloved lost party member, when he was shocked to see her alive and well in another game, albeit named by someone with a lisp. This triggered all the old, pent up traumas that had haunted him for the previous half-decade, and sent him spiralling downwards into deep depression again.

FM's cat said: "It was like, y'know, weird dude. One minute I was sitting on his lap playing with a bit of string, and next thing I hear this inhuman wail (and coming from a cat that should give you an idea of how inhuman it was) and I was out the catflap before I could say 'Meow'. I didn't even get my string back. Haven't seen him since. I worry about him, this whole episode doesn't just affect him, it rubs all of us up the wrong way. I'm thinking of suing myself, but hey, I'm a cat, what can I do?"

FM (speaking in an exclusive IRC meeting) told us: "Death of characters in games was nothing new 5 years ago, it was happening all the time, but each time there were safety nets. Sonic would respawn at a checkpoint, Lara would simply restart a level. But Aeris, poor innocent Aeris, she was just stabbed in the back with a big sword and dumped in a lake. It was just unheard of, she even lost all the items she was equipped with the first time around. And no matter what you did to avoid her dEaTh or n0 matTER WAHT yU did aFtErWaRds in The gaMe, it was USEleSs, she was gOn3. I'm...I'm sorry, I can't continUE, it haS been...emotionAl..."

Gamers throughout the world will be keeping a close eye on the developments in the ensuing legal battle. Should FM manage to sue successfully, this could open the floodgates for others to follow suit, and SquareSoft could be indunated with similar legal actions from other sufferers.

Judge Judy told us: "I'd love to try this case. There's nothing I like better than David vs Goliath scenarios (and making people cry of course). I could rip the SquareSoft lawyers apart, break them down, belittle them, I might even manage to accuse them of harassment. Just the fact that they'd be Japanese makes them guilty in my book. It's an open and shut case. I could make FM a lot of money out of it and maybe get a little extra to go towards the Pearl Harbour Benevolent Fund. It would make good TV. Unfortunately I'm tied up with a case involving a Los Angeles couple feuding over a fondu set, so I can't try it, but I wish FM all the best."

SquareSoft were staying tight-lipped over the whole affair when we tried to speak to them yesterday, referring us instead to their legal department in Akihabara, Tokyo. Their spokesman told us:

"Jeez, you'd think this FM guy would get a life..."

Incidently, you can also add septhiroth to your party using a cheat cartridge. But you don't get control proper control of him.

Whoops I've gone a bit OT

There is no way to bring Aerith back in the plot of the game. Using a cheat cartridge is the only way to get her back into your party, but this doesn't mean she has been ressurected.

there was a con a few years back where some guy claimed that you could bring her back by doing certain things in the game. Later he issued a retraction and apology.

FM, shouldn't you have marked this as a spoiler :S

Lol! :-D

Rare will be the next target after Conker's ending, especially as you're forced to watch a cutscene where Conker messes up such an obvious chance to bring Berry back...

Back to FF7.

I heard someone say that the Japanese version had you revive her, but it meant a cutscene where she was naked so they cut it out of western versions...

But that was probably some school friend feeding me a load of bull...

Ha ha ha! That was some good stuff.

Incidently I think you can bring Aeries back but I think you need one of those cheat cartridge things.
