That is if the creation of such a title stuck to the core principles of the T.V show and remained entertaining throughout.
And I know, yes 'we have seen it before', back on Playstation when we had a release that was absolute trash to say the least.
I can never forget trudging along in that game, doing so well despite it throwing blandness afer blandness at you, but yet, I defied it, i battled on regardless of my boredom-seeing this game based on one of my favourite TV shows being exposed as useless trash that it was.
Nevertheless I eventually got to the end of the game, it was my determination that got me that far only to be disappointed further with a hugely disappointing ending.
Two days later, i traded the X-Files game in.
But really, if a particular developer really -and i mean really- stuck at it and grabbed the spirit of the show which makes it great, the X-Files game would be greatly entertaining.
Consider this for a moment, with the X-Files franchise not only are you open to various storylines, but various gameplay styles as well.
You have your detective work-investigating crimes and paranormal phenomena, you have maybe your typical FBI shootouts and raids and even a typical Resident Evil like creeping about a desolate house part.
The X-Files franchise is open to many styles.
And with the TV show still in its prime, what a better way for developers to cash in and take advantage of the moment.
But in reality no one has, no developer out there is going to take that chance and delve that little further, possibly because they are afraid to due to Fox Interactives effort a few years back.
You see really, thats what is needed, for someone to take that chance.
Rare did it with Goldeneye and if they took the same attitude with the James Bond franchise because all previous 007 efforts failed, where on earth would we be without that title?
The X-Files is no different. Just because someone fails at it once in games, others shouldn't be put off the idea due to another developers failings.
So then, Is it a great franchise gone to waste or not?
I certainly think so.
There is one problem for devellopers.
Are they to be more faithful to the film or to the gameplay?
Rareware chose the gameplay.
In Goldeneye, it changed the plot in lots of ways in order to make the missions better.
James Bond didn't go around Train depot blowing up smuggled weapons in the film, he stopped the train by leaving his tank on the tracks.
Nor did he have to fight his way through loads of Janus special forces - that was put in to make the game better.
If the game hadn't been so briliant, fans of the film would've seriously slated the game for changing the film's plot so much. As it happened, it worked for the game.
Any other examples where devellopers had to make that choice?
This is a great shame, as technology has moved on, and it would now be quite possible to create fantastic games based on movies.
Mind you, the same could be true even if the original game was great.
Why has there ben no Ghostbusters game in the last decade?
I've never played it, but many now say that Ghostbusters on the C64 was a classic. I had a Ghostbusters game on the Megadrive, and it was pretty cool too. So can't we have another one now? That would so rule, 4 player split screen, wandering around a house, trying to capture ghosts. Having to work together to draw one into the box thing that captures them, only not crossing the beams for fear of your life. It would look and sound stunning, but the potential for play is massive.
There have been Back to the Future games in the past, and they've been awful. Not relevant to the film, odd games featuring the characters from the movies.
I'd take the Back to the Future license, and I'd make that game special.
Think of Majora's Mask, the way that it used time. Imagine something similar, certain events only occuring at certain times, and you being able to go back and change them.
Imagine taking elements of skateboarding games to escape from Biff. Take elements of driving games to drive in the Delorean, and get in up to 88mph. Then wrap in into a fabulous adventure, in which you have to manipulate events to make things happen, and gather items to fix the Delorean!
Must this potential be wasted because the Back to the Future games on the Sega Master System were rubbish?
That said, I think that developers are starting to revisit such classics, and give them another go. I've heard that a developer out there has picked up a license to make games based on the Rocky movies. I had Rocky on the Sega Master System, and it was great. But you only had to win 3 fights! (Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, and Ivan Drago) Mind you, therewere some cool training levels. A decent boxing game, featuring Rocky, would be cool. Especially if you stuck in the charity boxing vs wrestling Rocky vs Hulk Hogan match in from Rocky 3.
Developers are also going to be looking for something to put their game above the competition, and a decent license does make it stand out a little more. Just as long as they don't use it to create a sloppy game, and waste it again it could be very cool indeed.
1.bust into a room "Freeze, FBI"
2.creep around an empty house in the dark with a flashlight and a hand gun
3.the running through the woods chase scenes
4.mulder using stealth to break into a top secret army base
5.anything weird
would fit nicely into a x-files game
