Where would we be (or our games for that matter) without consoles? True gaming wouldn't exist only with the exception of PC gaming, but I'm more than certain that top developers like Rare and Capcom would not be around if PC gaming was the only form about.

Consoles have opened up wider views of the future and revealed the true possibilities gaming holds. Just think back to the days of the Commodore 64, Ataris and so on. They were once big in the industry like the next gen's are now, who would have thought of greater things at that time? We were all so busy dwelling on those addictive games to think of the future when really it is worth thinking about.

So then, consoles of the future. I don't mean the near future as in Xbox 2 or PS3, I mean the very distant future where maybe the stereotyped forld of flying cars would exist.

The right ingredients that make a good console are the following:

>Performance<
Every console nowadays has a reasonably good performance due to high tech chips built in them. Coincided with memory caches and a good laser, they have massively cut down on blocky graphics, slow loading times and sluggish gameplay to give what can be seen as a revolutionary experience. With such great performances, we can now with ease speculate about the future rather than the past. The effects of speculating at the past can be extremely mind boggling as I recently dicovered when attempting to give Die Hard on the PSone a go. I'll give you an insight; I could barely recognise McCane on screen.
Right now it's the Xbox that is the acclaimed "fastest console on the planet", but no one was really surprised once they realised where it came from.

>Looks<
Looks are everything, as the first sighted comments of the Xbox vividly proved. "It's too chunky" "Looks like a microwave" Whereas the PS2 and GameCube were calmly accepted and praised for their slick and mesmorising look. The Cube being a distincitive cube shape and the PS2 being.. well.. nice..looking.
Consoles are now progressing with their looks as well as performance, so maybe future stereotyping does help. I mean, just check out the new GBA on its way - silver body, slick shape - it looks the works! As for the Phantom? It looks like a squashed Sega Saturn, but as you know (or should know) nothing should be judged by its appearance.

>Consistency<
In games. Consoles need a good line up of good games in order to be successful. Whether it means sequels, remakes or whatever, good games are essential. That is why the PS2 has done so well sales wise, because its very popular predecessor (PSone) had a good number of decent games therefore the possibility of sequels drove recent buyers to purchase. It's the same issue with all the companies. This means they need to assign the right developers, showing good business skills, as well as organise and prioritise the correct games to be released at certain periods.
At the moment, Nintendo's consistency in good games is the best even though their sales records may not reflect this.

>Room for more<
It would be useless if a console was released that didn't have any future planning, like being able to go online, adapt to other forms of technology and so on. Okay, so maybe in the past consoles have never been capable of doing more things than just running games, but this is now, things have changed at it is now foreseeable that capabilities are also essential to make a good console.
This is where the console's creators really have to use their heads. They have to think of what's popular at the moment technology wise other than computer games, and try to interlink this with their console...so I think anyway. If you knew of an upcoming console that had plenty of capabilities like being able to interact with your MP3 player or communicate with friends through it, wouldn't you be most attracted to it? I definitely would. It's these possibilities that spice up the reputations of certain consoles. The Xbox for instance has a number of new things planned, most famously Xbox Live! Things like that and having advanced peripherals really make me long to own such a console, which is healthy for the industry, especially for the owner's wallet.
The GameCube is respected mostly because of its differences from the norm; mini-discs, wavebird pad that doesn't need a lead, being able to interlink GBAs in the control slots and so on. I was immediately impressed by that, but mostly impressed by the extended version of the GameCube, namely the Q Cube, which just looks stunning.
So far it seems to be the more capable a console is, the more attention it receives, so companies really have to plan ahead before releasing a console in order to be successful.

Now, these are all common factors that make for a good console, so how will future consoles surpass all this? Simple.

In the future, I can see consoles having built in digital projection slots where game images will be digitally projected instead of having to use a television. It will also allow you to change the size of the projected image, whether big or small, and the sharpness would be exquisite. This would solve the problem of having too small a telly or to shabby a telly. Every gamer would be equal in how they see their games.

Plus, the possibility of virtual realism is quite a distant one, but then again this is the very distant future I'm talking about here. Still, I wouldn't know how it would work with consoles so let's just say that with each futuristic console you are given a set of the same goggles stereotyped in sci-fi films, maximising your experience. I mean, how much closer can you get to the real thing? Maybe the fact that I'm a human only using 1% of my brain limits my ideas, but seriously other than virtual realism there can be no closer method.

Peripheral wise, consoles will be packed. Control pads would be made from an elastic material that latches on to your arm causing the buttons to eject from it and float around in front of you. These buttons are like frozen water droplets in the air that can be pressed with ease and precision once mastered. Also, in the 'Minority Report' kind of way, consoles will have a peripheral that allows you to freeze certain parts of the game, progress further, freeze more parts and then whenever you want with this peripheral you can stroke aside the frozen screens you don't want until you find the one you do want. This would be like a memory card, only a trillion times better. There would be many other peripherals only my brain capacity cannot think of such right now.

Oh boy! Consoles in the future will be so capable that PCs would probably not exist. Now, everybody knows consoles and PCs must differentiate for both to co-exist, so why not get rid of one of them and just have consoles? It would mean that consoles will get the best quality games as well as being able to play with millions worldwide; being able to download hardware for your console; being able to print screen shots you may need for art school or plainly just to listen to your favourite futuristic techno track. It would be phenomenal, and depending on what other nifty handhelds and gaming equipment is around at the time it is almost fate that they will all be able to interact with each other.

Their performance would undoubtedly be almost unimaginable. There will be no phrases like "loading", "saving", or even "slowdown", so much so that those terminologies once mentioned and heard, people will instantly make a mockery of you.. gamers that is. Graphics and gameplay will not need to be measured in their usual doses because every game on these futuristic consoles have their reassurance of being perfect no matter what. Don't worry though, games won't be too realistic that they would exceed escapism, but the only thing that would keep the industry running would be different ideas for games rather than improving on graphics and gameplay. Extreme Ironing for example would be most welcome because that after all is a unique idea.

My head is bloated now simply thinking of the possibilities! They are simply endless! Consoles are the future and the way to improve on all things concerning gaming. As you improve on the consoles capabilities and performance you are opening a new, wider road where games can become better in quality. The future for consoles is one thought that shouldn't go amiss, even though it may hurt your head in the process.

But for now, I guess my anticipation for the upcoming PS3 will have to do.

The PC definitely doesn't hold much of a future for gaming. It's the consoles that count. PCs have become more multimedia-like and there's just basically tons of stuff concerning it that doesn't link help gaming at all.

I've always seen consoles as the prime formats for games with the most potential because there always remains room for new ideas.

'why not get rid of pc's?'

most prob cos anyone who is serious about gaming and all those concerned such as the thousands of clans all play pc format for the other things pc offers over consoles.

irc internet forums websites etc etc

consoles are a nice platform for starters tho as almost every l337 player will have cut his teeth on one.

Consoles are very one dimensional in application and this is why PC reigns supreme for competitive gaming, why have 2 machines when one will do - which the PC currently holds that title
