...which appears right up my street. Turn-based battles, but with a twist, once your fighters engage there's a 'swing-meter' to master to time your blows, a bit like the overdrive moves for Tidus in Final Fantasy X I guess.

It's called Gladius, set in a Gladiator scenario (bet you could have guessed that from the title, huh?). You have to roam about the land recruiting and training gladiators, improving not just your own skills and stats but those of your recruits, adding new weapons and armor and accessories as you go, all in the buildup to a final battle with an evil god trying to destroy mankind or some such. There's 16 character classes, over 100 unique character types, and you get to complete in leagues as well.

To me, any game that combines the best elements from Final Fantasy X (turn based battles), Suikoden (collecting the 108 stars of destiny sounds akin to collecting gladiators in Gladius), Pro Evolution Soccer 2 (leagues) and Tiger Woods PGA Golf (swingometer) has got to be a surefire hit.

It's developed by .... LUCASARTS!!!! (Star Wars people) and is down for a release on the PS2, Gamecube and XBox in Spring this year. The official site is at:

Turn based combat is far better than real time, when it's done properly, unlike Final Fantasy

Not on PC then?

Bah. Sounds like a really good game, too.

Turn based combat while certainly not realistic, requires a lot more thought and skill than real time.

Unless you're like me and just use super powers.

Dance for me.

Sniper, FM, anytime you want a game, just ask, I'll play. :0)

I thought I've heard of Gladius. I pay most of my attention [which in fairness is still little] towards Lucasarts, simply because they've given me some of the greatest games there have ever been.

Unfortunately, they do tend to suck a lot these days.

All the same, where there are monkeys of islands and insane student girls that want to disect hamsters, there is hope.
