I just noticed that UT supports Glide. Isn't this a form of OpenGL for 3dfx cards? Seeing as I have a 3dfx, would I get better performance running in Glide? (My CPU is pants). Whether Linux supports Glide is another matter, but it would be interesting to try some things out in Glide.

Great. I always thought Glide was inferior but lately I'd been hearing that it's better. I'll run Glide when I next need it in Windows then.

If you insist on using Glide under Linux you'll end up using a proprietary kernel (module?) that only works with / under 2.2.12-something (circa 1998/9.. aagh) and a propietary X server which sucks..

Pity 3dfx stopped Linux development when it died. The opensource efforts (dri.sf.net, part of X4 -- albiet only OpenGL) will get you infinitely better performance without resorting to a system that belongs in the stone age. Windows 98 might still be useful, but Linux "98" really isn't.

Hum. I just remembered shortly after this though I do have libglide3 so that's probably it, but the connection at school is so incredible 14.4kbps-esque I couldn't be bothered to correct myself.

Linux does have some glide support, http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/3Dfx-HOWTO.html or have a look at the newsgroup, 3dfx.glide.linux

It's an API written by 3Dfx, exclusively for their chipsets. It takes advantage of the full range of features they offer, and Ruari always goes on about how much better UT looks with glide than ogl. Several older games have glide support built in, some have patches for support, but it was left behind a while ago by ogl...not really surprising, as 3dfx died..
