…On Controllers?

All consoles have a controller right? And the 3rd party ones are the same shape but are never the same quality or “Goodness” Anyhow, what if you could take controls to the next level?

What I’m getting at is the producers of these fantastic games machines are far too interested in what inside the actual machine, which, is very good and well done. But with everything getting “Upgraded” if you like I don’t think, personally they are spending enough time on the most important thing. The control.

You can argue all you like that the most important thing is the graphics etc etc but without a decent control with the buttons mapped out well you ain’t gonna be enjoying the game at all. So, I am getting, bored if you like of the “Standard” control. It’s a piece of plastic with pretty pretty buttons right? So why not that it to the next level? By having something else to control.
Not a pad, but, something else… Not a steering wheel or anything like that something new. Something that would revolutionise gaming controls for ever.

I have being thinking about a ball, or something based around a ball. We have seen this been used on PC controls, and the feedback has been fantastic, saying its so much easier and its so much fun and accurate. So why doesn’t someone adapt that idea, and take something to the next level?

In the near future we are expecting VR to take over, and everything will be changed. But, Hum. Why doesn’t someone put their brain power (God gave it to you for something y’know…) and introduce something that “Plugs” into your head, or, you place over your head, like a helmet. Yeah yeah you say, but what about this you control, by using your brain? The brain is capable of multiple tasks, bit like a pc, but its about a 1Billion x Infinite CPU. Its only an idea.

Ok, thinking more reality wise now. Maybe a control that.. you used with 2 hands, like there was 2 parts to the control, and one could be detached from the other using one 3d stick for running/strafing and another for aiming. With buttons and stuff all over the thing. Maybe someone could make them a little prettier, like putting lights on them.

If you could call them this, I think that controllers (Their technology anyway) are a bit dumb, they haven’t been advanced much at all.

The Snes, had shoulder buttons. The N64 control, had a 3d stick.. and Z-Trigger (Which is the best thing EVER!) But, apart from adding some little things the actual technology hasn’t “Improved” as they do. Maybe, there could be an LCD screen, and that could do something. Or, the buttons were pressure sensitive so depending how hard you pressed the button would determine how fast you went in a racing game lets say.

I am not having.. a Dig lets say at controls, but more like a rant about all controls.

Lets see which company has made the most advances in controller technology..

Sega: Megadrive, Saturn, and DreamCast. Not much advance, only a few shoulder buttons and analogue sticks. Quite good, I give 7/10

Sony: PSX, PsOne, PS2, just about no advance. Dual Shock, and analogue stick (Whoopy!, Not.) 3/10

Nintendo: Nes, Snes, N64, and upcoming GC: Invented shoulder buttons. And successfully used the 3d stick. Also made a Z-Trigger which was placed so well. 9/10

Microsoft: None yet, upcoming X-Box, looks suspiciously like a Dreamcast clone. Having not used one, 2/10.

As we can conclude, Nintendo is amazing :o)

So, does anyone agree? That its time for a little technology advance for “Le olde controlla” ?

I think its just about time.

Thanks for reading

I love that film, one of the best i've ever seen in fact the plots a tad tricky to follow at first though, but it did make me wonder where we will be in say 50 years time with gaming.

I think the Playstation 2 does something like that know.

No... it can... but Sony have wrecked the idea...

You see, the DC had triggers as shoulder buttons meening that they acted very like accelerator pedals in a car, moving about an inch. Thus you can just press them in a bit to go slow, or hold themn down to go fast.

The PS2 offers analogue sensors on every button, BUT because the buttons only press in about 3 mm, then it's hard to judge exactly how fast you're going.

errr... The Saturn had the FIRST EVER analogue stick in it's controller...

Like the PSX the saturn launched with a "normal" controller, but then a new, analogue one, was brought out with NiGHTS! which became the standard... it was great for driving games, and beat Nintendo to the scene by oevr a year!

So bunk up the Sega score!

Oh, and back to the topic...

Odd how in all the advances in graphics, sound et al, we still control our characters with lumps of plastic with coloured buttons on... something has to change!

How about eXistenZ style plug into you spine consoles?
