One thing is for sure... When you have a product that becomes popular, always expect to see someone trying to point out its flaws and put it down. The "angry moms" out there would do anything for some attention, especially in this country. When something comes along that holds a bit of controversy and popularity, there are always those groups who just need to jump on the band wagon of its success.
I think we have already begun to accept the gore factor in videogames. The first Mortal Kombat in 1992, in my opinion, was the beginning of the craze of controlling the violence level of home games. There was great censorship between the coin op arcade and the home versions. After a while we had gotten used to the violence and gore (and the complaints from the fans!) and they decided not to censor the second installment of the series. Now days, games such as Grand Theft Auto, Dead to Rights, Max Payne, Serious Sam, and Hitman II are accepted by players and there isn't much anybody can do to take those games away from us.
BMX XXX is the first home system game that bases itself strictly on playing to see some skin. What a great concept, ride your bike, do well, and go to the strip club to see some boobs! Of course this generates great controversy. Should boobies be allowed in video games? After all, games are for kids right?
Not in this lifetime! Video games have always been there for adults. Same as cartoons. Nobody ever created any form of entertainment with children in mind. Cartoons were originally created to entertain adults. If you don't believe me, check out one of the first Flintstones episodes. You will know what I’m talking about when you see Fred and Barney tell their women to go clean something while they bust out with the cigarettes. They actually used to advertise for the cigarette companies. Over time they censored the franchise to be more understanding to children. Video games, similar to cartoons, have always been there to entertain the adults first, children second. This is why I believe that there is no problem with going out on a limb to try to satisfy the adult entertainment industry like the software developers are doing now. Nobody has any problem with pornography on the WEB, magazines, and DVDs. The video game industry should be no exception.
Of course it's almost impossible to try something new without getting into some trouble with those angry moms that plague our beloved country. But in order to accept a new medium of explicitness, there must be a beginning, as what we are seeing now, the break through of "real world entertainment" via home video games. It may take off and become something huge, or it may fail and disappear into the shadows of the gaming community. Either way, violence, gore, and nudity in my videogames are alright by me!
Trying to take undeserved credit where you?
Damn you're despersate!
tsk tsk tsk.
"George and I will play with our twangers, while.."
Nice post :)
