We're not trying to find someone like that today. Well, not exactly. We're here to match up the consoles and see their strong and weak points. The features, the games, the controller, and even the looks will be considered. And it will all be added up in the end.
First of all, the looks. Gamecube, Nintendo's next-generation console, has a small compact size that appeals to many gamers. It allows it to be tucked in a cubbyhole or packed neatly when you are moving. Yet the color of Gamecube is not very popular amongst most gamers. Purple has long been shunned as the gross or stupid color. It comes in more colors, yet purple is the most widely knowing one. The controller, though, has gone through another major change. Nintendo and Super Nintendo had relatively similar controllers. But on the N64 the controller put on a new look. Not satisfied, Gamecube has a new controller that may or may not be perfect.
Xbox is practically a complete opposite of Gamecube, however. It's the largest of the consoles, and therefore not perfect for those looking for compactness. Its controller is not small either. To me it's average sized, but to others it may be a bit big. Microsoft solved this, however, with the release of the S controller, a smaller version of the regular one. The Xbox is black, with a green "Jewel" in the center.
PS2 has been long awaited by gamers and developers everywhere. It's a sleek, slim machine, flat and wide. It has a special stand for being put upright, and is average sized. PS2 hasn't changed too much since PS1. It still has the same controller, same memory card, same disks. It even plays PS1 games. But the colors have changed from gray to black, and the main consoles look has changed. Other wise it's your same old console.
Next are the features. Gamecube has an advantage because of its multiple next-generation consoles. Game Cube and Gameboy Advance can be hooked together. You can have two games interact with each other. Gamecube also is in the process of developing a small 56K modem adapter and a broadband internet adapter for online gaming.
PS2 has it's extras, like steering wheels. But the real feature that sets it apart is the possibility to play old PS1 games. With many games still coming out for PS2, there is the good thing that if you make a game for the PS1 it will be available to all Playstation gamers. Another nice add-on I found was a special Linux add-on. You can turn PS2 into your very own Linux computer.
Xbox has some good things too. It (and PS2) can play DVDs. It also has online play (as will PS2). The difference is that GameSpy has already started an online service to start up the online fun. Also, a number of nice peripherals come along with it, such as a board that realistically lets you skate, surf, and snowboard in games.
Finally, our games. Gamecube has a nice array of games. Some of its more popular games include Super Mario Smash Bros Melee, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Pikmin. But many of their games are targeted towards younger gamers than those who make up the majority. Games such as Luigi’s Mansion have been shunned by older players. And the small controller fits better in the hands of smaller children.
The PS2 has a good lineup coming out. Giving developers over 6 years to work on their games, PS2 has an enormous amount of games, such as GTA3, Medal of Honor Frontline, and Test Drive. Most of PS2's games are intended for the majority of gamers, so that it can capture all audiences.
Xbox has had the least time to let developers make games. But at E3 2002 over 100 games coming out for Xbox were shown. Xbox also has some great launch titles and upcoming games such as Halo, Project Ego, and Battlefield 1942. Xbox is also coming out with a *shiver* Barney and Friends title, so little children will not be left out.
Now, if there weren't any opinions somewhere, this wouldn't be an editorial, would it? Now, I believe that all of the systems are good in their own way. Xbox is a very nice system with a mess load of new games coming out. PS2 is an old favorite and is kind of a medium game console. Gamecube is good for many younger gamers. But I'm going to have to rank them up, so...
Number 3 - Gamecube
Gamecube had a lot of pros within itself, but its small size was not very impressive, as in I could not hold the controller. That was the one factor that made it fall...
Number 2 - None
You'll see...
Number 1 - Tied between PS2 and Xbox
I just couldn't decide. Xbox has superior games such as Halo, but so does PS2 like GTA3. Xbox has a good sized controller (and a smaller one for smaller hands) yet so does PS2. They're both evenly matched and will probably both come out on top of the console war.
My final thoughts? Don't listen to me. Don't go out buying a PS2 AND Xbox unless you either A.Are rich unlike me, or B.Believe what I believe. You may find much more in Gamecube than I do. You may absolutely love Xbox and hate PS2. Remember, this is my opinion. The Console War is all about what is the best. You decide what is best for you.
That post aggrovated me, as opposed to providing a solution - and I can't see what help it would be to someone looking to buy a new console. It was a nice effort, but most of it was wrong and slanted. I agree with your last paragraph, but lets face it, posts like this a rather redundant to the people on these forums, and the vast amount of information on offer.
