Steve's aim in life seems to be to protect and serve wildlife and in particular crocodiles. The game could run off the Resident Evil engine and as Steve gets himself into sticky situations your job will be to take over as his wife as she tries to rescue him from situations where no other man or woman would want to be. Every time Steve kills a Crocodile he loses health and for every 5 crocodiles killed you have to take over as his wife as she is set certain tasks from the out back master. For those who are keen on 'Crocodile Hunter Diaries' will be aware that in one episode Steve has to out pace a hungry Komodo dragon as he powers his way through the Australian out back. In the game these would be called 'Gauntlet runs' and every time Steve encounters an enemy that his tools can not handle the game will automatically go into on-rail mode and your job will then be to guide Steve for 2 minutes along a trail before losing the chasing creature in an explosive cut scene which would borrow from the Matrix and Max Payne as he dives for safety.
The main aim of the game is to find Steve's sanity back by fighting his way through the out back trying to regain the lost human inside. The sanity effects that occur in Eternal Darkness would kick in every time Steve is lured into a crocodile pit and this will knock a % of the sanity bar. At the beginning of the game you would start off with the bar on 100% but every time you see yourself trying to save animals and not your family the game will deduct it by 2-5% depending on the severity of the situation. To regain Steve's sanity the player must always stay within 20 metres of his family and avoid straying off into areas where his wife can not reach. Like the 007 Bond titles the game would feature a mixture of on-rail, driving and adventure missions only this time they will blend into each other and the player will struggle to get bored with the endless routes on offer for the player to take.
At the end of each objective the player will receive a bonus depending on how well they played the previous mission. Every mission will have bonus items on offer and for collecting 5 'She's a Beauty' icons the player will be awarded with a new non lethal weapon or tool which can be used at any time during the game. As Steve's objective is not to kill or rescue Crocodiles or creatures the player will be left in a predicament of what to do and use in certain situations. At the start the player will have just a net and 5 tranquiliser darts which must be used wisely, however for successfully completing a mission and for collecting bonus icons this will be increased and new methods for catching the crocodiles will become available.
The game will use a mixture of different styles ranging from stealth to driving however the main part of the game will see Steve playing a cross between Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell) and Max Payne (you guessed it from Max Payne only Steve Irwin can't use lethal force and his wife is still alive)! The stealth aspect will only play apart on the approach to the animal and as with the Tenchu series the player will be given different options on how to dispose of an enemy. The control scheme will be kept nice and simple and for the patient gamer they can combine different stealth techniques to do a surprise attack on the unsuspecting out back beasts!
Without using lethal force the player will have to use a blend of tranquillisers and nets which as I have already mentioned can be upgraded depending on how good the player is. Netting a creature will bag Steve 100 points and tranquillising a creature will net Steve 50 points. At the end of every mission the out back master will convert points into prizes and this is when the player will be able to buy new clothes and equipment for the next mission. For every creature killed Steve will lose 20 points and for every crocodile injured Steve will lose 100 points. The only time Steve will encounter a crocodile is either in a boss fight (this is when Steve can use lethal force to stay alive) and if a wrong path is taken or if the player fails to successfully complete an on-rail chase.
The three different mission types will all lead to one goal and that is for Steve to once again act normal and lose the super human reflexes that he has at the beginning of the game. As you progress through the adventure Steve's will become harder to control as he begins to lose his super human strength and this will be apparent in the final battle! The driving stages will be there to split up the game and to take Steve and Co. to different areas around Australia. The on-rail sections will only apply when Steve has to escape from a more powerful creature and for the majority of the game the Splinter Cell meets Max Payne approach will apply.
In development by ÂLІÂÎR studios the game will be released for Christmas 2004 and with a price tag of £1000 you better get saving! By collecting 100 'Crikey She's a beauty vouchers' from your local Special Reserve shop you can earn up to £1 of the purchase, however only 1 voucher per week may be obtained. For pre-orders ÂLІÂÎR studios will be giving away real baby crocodiles and a photo of Steve for your bedroom or place of worship. Any ideas towards the game would be appreciated however ÂLІÂÎR studios will take full credit without a mention of where the ideas or information came from. Remember though, life isn't a game and Steve is a responsible adult who takes the up most care when handling dangerous creatures (yeah right). For an information pack please contact ÂLІÂÎR studios but do not be alarmed if you don't receive a reply however do take it personal! The Adventures of Steve Irwin and CO. is going to be the title of 2004, in the mean time however stay safe, cross at the Zebra crossing and get saving those vouchers! Every penny counts.
Stay tuned at watch out for Christmas 2004!
