What’s your favorite most best game of all time?
I bet most of you out there said a game from the PC, n64, Sony playsation 1 or from a console with a higher performance such as the xbox. But why? Have games got better since the darkages of the Sega master system.

In a way yes; The graphics and realism has grown dramatically and with the introduction of 3-D worlds it seems the depth that a game can go into now a days can almost trigger real emotions from the gamers such as fear or love (ah Rikku, we will be together soon my love).
Though really things we are saying about games like final fantasy X and Splinter-cell today are nearly exactly the same as we were saying about super Mario bros (snes) or sonic the hedgehog (master system) some years back.

So its not the fact that the older games are rubbish, but the fact that you (the public) expect more.

This got me thinking. Why try and invent new games when you can revamp some old favorites from the golden age of gaming. I know people have kinda started to do this. Sonic advance (gba) is a good one, Mario 64 (n64) and even pong.
However I’m not talking about sequels, just the original game with some more levels and perhaps some advanced gameplay with a dose of 3-D.
Here are some examples that I would like to be regenerated into brand spanking new (yet old) games:

Streets of rage (megadrive)
You’ve all heard of this and I’m guessing most of you have played on it. This was in one word amazing. First you chose a character out of 3 people with each of them having special moves and techniques, i was mostly axle as its an anagram of my name and he’s got a great move like a flying kick using his knee. You start off with a side view of a street with your character and then various people who wish to beat you to a plup appear from the sides. You must kill all of them before advancing along the street. Once you reach the end there’s normally a boss with some great physical abnormality that you have to battle with.
But you don’t just fight on steerts, the game takes you to many different locations such as boats and floors on buildings. With the new graphics available today and the higher quality game engines not only would you be able to fight in stunning surroundings but the character dialog and amount of moves you could do would be breath taking.
Streets of rage also has a two player function along with special moves with the involvement of the police so maybe you could have more options on there like being the police braking up fights or 2-4 player battles.

Rampart (master system)
This game you start to play and can’t put down.
You play as the red army fighting on different positions on you island against the blue army ship.
Each screen has 3 castles of different sizes.
First you pick one.
Then place as much cannons in as you can in the walls.
Try and blow up the on coming ships in the time limit. (They also fight back. They each fire cannon balls that destroy your castles walls)
You then have 30 seconds to try and fill in the walls in a Tetris type game. The computer gives you random shaped/sized pieces. If you push the A button the piece turns 90 degrees and if you push the B button bit of wall is bit where the piece was.
If you do not make a full circuit wall around your castle you lose a life and have to go onto another castle. But on the up hand if you complete your castle you can build a wall and conquer another castle (getting more points) or surround a area of grass with a wall and in the next stage fill it with loads more cannons.
I must admit that this game does need a touch up of graphics, as it’s a 2-d over birds eye view
But maybe with a kind of red alert look to it and if handled with care you can just tell this is going to be a classic.

Not just old games though could do with rejuvenation. Some playsation 1 games could do with a boast.
Here’s just one out of the bucket:

Final fantasy 7
It’s not that the graphics are bad in this game, quite the opposite infact. The backgrounds are stunning and the movie sequences are to die for. Everything about this game is amazing except one single thing.
One thing that stands out so much that after a while you forget about it.
Yes you’ve guessed it, the bockyness (is that really a word?) of the characters.
They’re arms start off as very thin sticks and then by the time you get to the hands they’ve grown 10 times the width. Also everyone’s heads are blocks, not rounded blocks, just blocks.
If the guys in Square could fix this problem and maybe touch up on the battle graphics here and there, then realise it onto the ps2 you know its going to be a hit (again).

Well I have only touched on a few games today but there are so many more around and about.

You never know, in a few years you might see body harvest 2003 on the gamecube, actually on second thought...
