For arguments sake lets say that one-day somehow you saved the pope’s life and he granted you immortality. Great, you might think to yourself but at first it might seem like a good thing but seeing as though you are going to live forever you should really look forward:
1. You still might die!
This might sound weird but you still could die. People still have accidents. They fall off ladders, are run over by cars and involved in violent conflicts that sometimes end their lives. Also there is a chance you might catch a disease or might have inherited a disability. Say if you get something like cancer of AIDS you would have to live out the rest of you live with these diseases, something with doesn’t sound to nice. Arthritis is something you would defiantly get if you lived forever. Your joints would eventually ware away. Also if you live forever and you smoke you better give up pretty sharpish. I’m not sure but thousands of years smoking isn’t a good thing for! You’re sure to get cancer of more than bodily organ and you might have to breathe though a hole in your throat as is seen on TV by many people who smoke too much. Also you would look awful. Smoking doesn’t improve the condition of your skin but makes it worse. On tests carried out on identical twins, one who smoked the other who didn’t, the twin who did smoke had poorer quality skin and she did look older than the other twin even though they where the same age. So if you do live forever you quality of live wouldn’t be a good one after a few hundred years.
2. Everybody else isn’t Immortal
If you were the only immortal then you would have to watch everybody around you grow old and die. Your friends and family would die and even though you can make new friends in the future you would also have to watch them die as well, the same with your family. You would see generations of your family from the start to the finish. Also imagine if you had a wife/girlfriend. You would have to see them die and also you would have to see your children die as well. Something with isn’t too appealing.
3. Everybody else Is Immortal
Your not the only immortal, like the elves in J.R.Tolkins "Lord of the Rings" everybody lives forever. The only way people would die is from death inflicted by other humans through war, murder and suicide. The first and most obvious thing is overpopulation. Seeing as only a small percentage of the worlds population will die without natural deaths compared to the current birth rate it would only be a matter of decades before space would become short and food supplies as well as natural/unnatural resources would also become short and eventually depleted. The world will most constantly be in a state of war, fighting over land and resources. Would the government in-act some sort of regulations on how many children a couple could have IF that couple where allowed children at all? Also would the government in-act some sort of organised death sentences on certain "classes" of people to cut down on overcrowding? Would there be a government as we know it or would there have to be some sort of new type of control to cope with these problems?
3.1. True Immortals
If everybody else where true immortals, as in they could live forever and could never die by any means, then we everybody in the world will most certainly live in an extremely poor condition of life. In time people would cover most of the available land, there would be no room for crops or cattle and the sea would have been completely stripped of food. We would be extremely malnourished but seeing as though we are immortal we would never die. We would be too weak and tired to do anything but lie there and physically as well as mentally waste away. We would have used up all of the natural resources as well, so unless we would have developed a way for a power plant to maintain itself we would life in darkness as well as the cold during night-time and winter. Depression would be rife.
On a lesser note if everybody lived forever imagine staying with you significant other forever. Could you manage it? You would get bored of the other person, everything they say and do will be something they have said or done before. There would be nothing new in that person. Marriage would have to be changed to compensate for this. Also you would have numerous children, which could lead to you spending a fortune at christmas!!!
4. Darwin would be upset!
Seeing as we never die and we will only breed rarely it would take an extremely long time for us to evolve. This could be a bad thing if the environmental conditions of the planet change or if we want to colonise another planet with different conditions to these. Normally it would only take a few (well more than a few actually) generations for us to change to cope with these changes, but seeing as though breeding would rarely take place any changes could be very dangerous to the human race. The same would be the same for animals (if they where immortal as well) natural evolution would be too slow and it could eventually lead to us being extinct in extreme circumstances.
5. It would get very boring.....eventually!
There is only so much literature, there is only so much music, there are only so many films, there are so many games and there are only so many people. Eventually you would have read every book, heard every piece of music, seen every film, played every game and had every possible conversation with every other person. There would be nothing new. Although this feat would take an amazing amount of time to complete, you are living forever! I’m sure there are also many skills you could try and master but eventually you would master them as well. Everything would have been done before. Life would be boring.
6. Religion
I’m sure that one or two question would be raised about religion if we where to live forever. I can’t really go into this as I only know a little about religions.
So there are a few bad things about living forever. If you can think of anything else that I have forgotten or have not included please say so. If you think that living forever is a good thing and that I’m just looking at it from one point of view that have your say.

If you had the choice between dying yourself, or watching a friend die, could you honestly say you'd rather be the one passing on?
Oh yeah, one more thing to add. I saw a program about lifespan of our generation, and so on, some time ago. They worked out that if people didn't die of old age, or age related causes, the average lifespan would still only be 500 years old.
Doesn't say much for the safety of living in this world, does it?
Just when you thought you'd won, they'd make a sequel that didn't really fit in with the plot line of the first, and after you adapted to all that, they'd make another sequel which mocked the end of the first film and made the second have not happened, just because of a bloke in a cave.
And you'd sound like a french chipmonk when you spoke, have a slightly seedy laugh and say 'there can be only one'... or 'waaan' too much.
And would you really wanna be around when it's the end of the world??? NO!
