'"Bin Laden dead" claim dismissed', report 'This Is London':

Claims that terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden may have died of kidney failure have been dismissed by the US general leading the hunt for him.

Responding to comments by Pakistan's president Pervez Musharraf, General Tommy Franks, commander in chief of US Central Command, said nothing in his intelligence reports confirmed or denied the theory.

President Musharraf suggested on Friday that the US bombing campaign against Afghanistan may have cut off the al-Qaida leader's access to vital treatment.

In London, the Foreign Office said it was aware of the Pakistani leader's comments, but was not in a position to confirm the claims.

Speaking in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, President Musharraf told CNN: "I think now, frankly, he is dead for the reason that he is a patient, a kidney patient.

"We know that he donated two dialysis machines into Afghanistan. One was specifically for his own personal use."

President Musharraf did not indicate whether he had intelligence reports to back up his suspicions.

In Washington, officials said they had no evidence that Bin Laden had severe kidney problems, much less had died of them.

And Tommy Franks, commander of US forces in Afghanistan, said he was aware of President Musharraf's statement, but added: "I haven't seen anything in intelligence that would confirm or deny that."

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said US officials did not know whether Bin Laden had died, but added: "I don't think the President (George Bush) would view that as an unwelcome event."

I think Bin Laden is dead, but we will all find out soon. What do you think?

He will be, that much is sure. The alliance is never ever going say if they have narrowed down where this man is. The first anyone will know is when Bin Laden is safely in the US awaiting trial or when his body is retrieved and brought to the US for verification. The American people want this man, as should every right thinking person on this planet. The largest military/intelligence/support operation the world has seen since the Gulf War is now directed upon finding certain individuals, and the Americans arent going home without them, nor are the British. The naysayers all said that the Taliban could not be finished - they have been, that destroying the Al Queda/Taliban grip on Afghanistan would not be possible - they have lost Afghanistan, that the Taliban would fight to the last - they surrendered. All the negative comments about this campaign have been proven wrong.

No one has forgotten Saddam, apart from the BBC news. Sky and CNN regularly run bits about the no fly zone in operation there, and rumours that refuse to ide in the news indicate that Saddam is next on the list if he doesnt opne his sites to UN inspection.

Not a valid point at all. Over 60 years ago the US "stuck its nose" into other peoples business and shortened the war by at least 2 years, amybe even saved Britain. Its all to easy for people too have a go at US foreign poilcy and conveniently act like the UK does no wrong. You think the US is bad then take a look at British colonial history.... The terrorists are after any country that Bin Laden sends them against. Arrests this week in Leicester, and the guy arrested with the shoe bomb, proves that Britain is as much a target as ever.

People are very good at saying the war in Afghanistan is wrong, but its not the war they have a problem with, its the fact that America is doing it. The reasons they give are usually rubbish and short sighted and I am so fed up of hearing the same ones. Fact is, 150 years ago we, as a nation, were far worse than America and heped nobody, we just invaded and controlled places. America represents what England had and lost. A world with an isolationist America would be the closest thing you can get to hell right now, because no one else has the force and strength and resolve to do something. America does what the others talk about but are too worried about covering their own political backs to do. This quote sums it up;

"Why do people mark history by the wars ? It's because they love to see something big explode and be torn apart from the inside, they just forget about the consequences."

I meant that it must be pretty hard for Bin Laden to survive, under the conditions that he is facing, were his country is getting bombed, and a large number of them bombs are used to "flush him out", don't you agree that that is very hard to live with? That is basically what my post was saying

Things is, however well informed you are, you're only informed of the parts that haven't been 'selectively dropped' from whivhever form of media it happens to be.

Obviously Bin Laden is never going to be killed or captured.

Eventually, the fuss will die down, and he'll be largely forgotton, much like Saddam Hussien [excuse spelling]. The world needs hate figures, and they're no good once they're out of action. Let's face it, this is a great excuse for the US to keep on sticking it's nose into other countrys business for as long as they like.
