I went to watch a rather entertaining 'Mullholland Driver' in the week of last and as wonderfully spectacular the film was, amoungst other Lynch films I wondered whether the film actually made much money. Due to the fact that Lynch enjoys to explore a more extravagent narrative than other Hollywood film, his appeal is limited to those who like Lynch, those who follow film and those who are curious.

I looked at some of Lynch's work and discovered that most of his fim did not make money. Eraserhead was different but such films as Blue Velvet and The Lost Highway made little to no profit. The only film which made a notable profit was The Elephant Man, and one must feel that Anthony Hopkins play a major role in pulling in the audience. Looking at Mullholland Dr. the cost of the film should be of a significant amount. However, looking at the total returns so far, the film seems set to lose money.

Then comes the question. Why would the extremely stingy film producers bother to spent millions on a person who's target audience wouldn't repay the money spent in producing the film? Twin Peaks was pretty sucessful and may have allowed the multi-talented Lynch to play producer also but who else would play such a gamble? Maybe Lynch's films brainwashed the producers. I don't know, but stepping back a little, theres a possibility.
