The new version of Planet of the Apes is not out on DVD yet. However, I did not know this when I went shopping a few weeks ago. In Electronics Boutique I saw a DVD entitled 'Planet of the Apes'. This was a new addition to their DVD stand, and presuming it was the updated version, I bought it. However, getting home it took me the whole of 2 seconds to realise I had bought the better, but technically worse forebear. This annoyed me, and I promptly returned the DVD for my refund. The reason? A ruthless con by the company. I knew that this DVD was not on the stand before; I generally browse there most times I'm in town. This time though, it had its own seperate shelf, with more than a dozen copies. Just looking at the back of the DVD I couldn't tell that it was the older version, and any casual buyer would think that it is the new, cinema version. Its just a money scandal to get people to buy the blasted thing.
And now I'm seeing it again. Big stalls with the animated version of Lord of the Rings, riding on the success at the box office. A dumb-minded or generally careless punter could think that this is the real thing, and even if not the DVD is selling very well. I find it disturbing that shops will sell other products to ride on the success of other things. Like Digimon and Pokemon. Pokemon came long before Digimon, and the only real reason Digimon was successful is because of Pokemon.
I know anyone with a careful eye would notice these things, but sometimes people can be dumb (ie. when buying an Army Men game), and big corporations shouldn't con people out of their money. I know this is their big web site and all, but on www.ukdvd.com, on the right hand banner that usually depicts new releases, there is the Final Fantasy DVD, the Rush Hour 2 DVD and the animated Lord of the Rings. I know that this is a marketing manoeuvre to get people to buy it, and while really just being a ruthless con, people do fall for it. I'm not meaning to knock Special Reserve, because it is a clever move, I'm just talking about companies in general.
But, in the real world it is dog eat dog, only the tough survive, and money is the source of every problem. Until the consumer learns about how companies are literally stealing the money from their pocket, this will continue and more and more people will be conned.

It depends, again you are basically saying that because some people do not like a release then everyone should be denied it. Top Gun, Navy Seals, Transformers, Ghostbusters, Babylon 5, GI JOE - all these are mine, and others, favourite DVDs, as well as other modern titles obviously. Many wouldn't even look at these let alone buy them ! I enjoy them though so why should what I want to watch not be released ? I thought Gone in 60 seconds, Traffic and Epsiode 1 were rubbish, but I'd never want them not to be sold. Some fans of the original planet of the apes thought the new film was rubbish, so maybe the new film shouldnt be brought out eh ? A film, game, music or whatever is entitled to a release as long as its content is legal and the creator is willing to release it, any society which restricts what it can potentially buy for any other reason is a worrying one - let people choose for themselves what they want to own.
