With all of the talk about online games, I don't think I've read anything about online sports games, and in particular, football.

I believe that the Dreamcast had a football game that you could play online (or so they advertised it) though was this not just controlling your team against someone elses?

Also you can play Championship Manager online, but that's limited only to management.

I think a network football game (also in the arcades) should allow you to play as only one player during the match.

Have a total of 22 gamers, all trying to make intelligent runs, make passes, amrk an opposition player - it would be a totally new experience for a football game.

Of course, it might not be much fun if you don't get the ball much, so maybe the teams would have to be smaller, 5 vs 5, or something. You'd be more likely to be involved in the game that way. Another way it could be frustrating is if one of your team mates is a complete spong, and keeps losing the ball, but Man Utd seemed to manage quite well when Andy Cole was in the team, so it shouldn't hamper your chances of victory too much!

If the concept of being only one player is used, you can also have other options, even in a single player mode against the the computer.

You could play 'Wembley' (do you kid's still call it that?) A game with any number of players, all against all. We have one goal, and one keeper. Basically you have to get the ball, and score a goal to go through to the next round. Once you score you sit out until the next round, and the only player that doesn't score is knocked out. This would be cool to play, as it differs greatly from a normal football match.

You could also play 'Heads and Volleys' a game in which you can only score with a header, or a volley, obviously!

You should be able to still play old style, when you control which ever player has the ball, if you want, but they should also vary that a bit too. How about 'park football'. 10-16 rndom players show up at the local park, and you take turns to pick players. You pick rules like 'rush goalies' and stuff. That would be fun. Anyway, you should have jumpers for goal posts, and stuff, and the option to play with a crappy light plastic ball too. You'd have to deal with the terrain, avoid trees, dips in the surface, and if you were really cruel you could roll the ball into dog poo, then kick it at the opposition.

I reckon any football game that had these options instead of 101 different cup competitions you could enter would be a great success.

I agree with Ortega, it'd be brilliant to play with and against 21 other HUMAN players, rather than the same old predictable CPU-controlled players. A game like ISS would be even bigger on-line!! Lets hope it 'kicks-off' some time in the near future!

I think the DC footy game was actually American football made by Sega Sports. Apparantly it was meant to be the best in its genre and pulled off v. well.
