Just days after it was confirmed that even if a buyer can be found for the orlando magic, the franchise won't be moved from orlando, news of a possible relocation of north carolina's charlotte hornets has been announced.
A quick ctl+c, ctl+v'd summary follows, to see more get there via nba.com
"Louisiana Gov. M. J. “Mike” Foster and Charlotte Hornets co-owners Ray Wooldridge and George Shinn have reached an agreement paving the way for the NBA team to move to the New Orleans Arena for the 2002-03 season.
....
Wooldridge and Shinn said they will apply to the NBA for the relocation today. The move will require a simple majority of 15 votes from the 29 owners, most likely to occur at the NBA Board of Governors meeting in April."
Memphis have done it, though as a matter of necessity. Now the hornets to go as a matter of marketing? Their huge pr success of the mid '90s was far beyond the presence of the 3 team members painted on a muiral on the side of the largest bank in charlotte, Mourning, Johnson and Bogues. Maybe it's time to repeat that success with a new wave of marketing.
Or maybe north carolina just isn't big enough. Though the only basketball competition of any description comes from the tar heels of the university of north carolina, they are an ever growing club, reaching ever growing levels of success, one game from the conference finals of the playoffs (who knows, if toronto had overcome the sixers, it could easily have been the hornets getting schooled by shaq and kobe in the playoff finals?).
The shock impact of dave wesley and baron davis won't be reflected in their salaries, yet. Pleanty of salary cap room. Jamaal mashburn will soon be fully recovered from his hamstring injury, and derrick coleman looks to be staying healthy. The strength of the bench looks good this year too, and without mashburn, the team have kept the team around the playoff spaces. Just think what'll happen when he comes back....
There doesn't seem any reason for the move to be blocked, unless unlikely complications develop, but if the move pays off, it could turn the hornets into a force to be reckoned with.
