The Antichrist, Devil, Satan or whatever label you give him is undoubtedly one of the most talked about 'entities' in religion and a film about him never goes amiss. Flashy light shows, overwhelming pyrotechnics, loud music and roaring fans are more often than not the base of this 'foul play'. What I am speaking of is rock music. Many artists such as Ozzy Ozzborne, Judas Preist and Kiss tend to controversially play on or hint at the fact that they support the Antichrist, or at least, that is how their fans and critics alike perceive it. For many rock musicians, a concert is the perfect setting to not only display their talents but to raise as much hell as possible. It's the 'go against your parents' wild, party-type atmosphere that can only be experience if felt in person.

Rock began as flashy, spandex-clad musicians strutting their 'stuff' infront of thousands at concerts. The fans get a buzz and testesterone is thrown about the room like a hot potato. It puts you in a different, more aggressive mindframe. Listen to the start of any Rock song and it's instantly recognisable that it's not a song about puppies running through the meadows, which is why the general consensus of people take Rock music and label it as 'evil', which is a pretty fair comment. There are a variety of genres: Death, Satan, Death and Satan and many more. Even the most light-hearted of people have destructive urges, and Rock just let's you release those urges and crack some heads. Some people find Rock as an escape from a reality or a recluse. Led Zepplin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath were early Rock, and it soon changed style to more 'poppy' with such bands as Wasp, who wore make up and hair spray and tried to put on a real spectacle. By the introduction of Pop Rock, the sexuality of linear Rock had transfered to the Pop Rock genre, giving Pop Rock bands a rather large fanbase with the females, and linear Rock getting a predominantly male following. With Rock, fans tend to stay loyal, whereas with other genres, their fans seem to be not as dedicated and get bored more quickly. Rock fans are a brotherhood, in that you will see them act like a family, all sharing the same interests etc.

Some people claim that to listen to Rock you must have a certain mentality about you, which can be true in some aspects. A large percentage of Rock fans are legitimate 'nutters', who would gladly smash heads with any willing occupant. A lot of them attempt to replicate their idols in attire, by using the hair spray and the make up, and as some people claim 'make a fool of themselves'. It's not just the fans that are a cropper; just take a look at Ozzy Ozzborne. When a fan through a bat on stage, presuming it was plastic, he bit it's head off and threw it back into the crowd. Ozzborne was rushed to hospital for Rabies shots and just scathed through a conviction for animal cruelty. The adrenaline was rushing, but people panning Ozzy for his bad deed soon slowed it down. After the shock died down, people looked up to Ozzy as a god for some reason. Possibly it showed that Ozzy was the only one with gahoonies to bite the head off of a bat.

If the Antichrist was a musician, he would be either Heavy Metal or Rock. Let's face it, you'd never see him in a Folk or Jazz club would you? When the 'myth' of the Antichrist came into main focus, people suddenly thought that Judas Preist was symbolic of Judas Isscariot and that James Dio was portraying god and inverting it into something slightly sinister. The primary reason why Sabbath, Dio, Preist and so many others made their sales was that it's controversial. For instance, Eminem wouldn't sell as many albums if he was singing about birds in the woods. These 'sadists' as they are called are not the mad men that their name implies. Yes, it's strange that their goal in life is to cause mayhem, but it's their life, and would you like someone controlling your life? Soon after the 'bat incident' involving Ozzy Ozzborne, people really began to judge bands and fit them to a specific group. People believed that Gene Simmons and Ozzy Ozzborne were Satan worshippers, which was a complete lie. Ozzy and Rio are in the industry to have fun (aside from making money) and people have actually taken them seriously.

Rock music is not to be taken seriously!

I thinks it really stupid that people associate this with rock and roll at all, or that performers associate themselves with the antichrist (or whatever) The antichrist is only from one religion, christianity. So saying they believe in it is the same as saying they're christian surely ?

What I ahte about today is that musicians feel they have to play a role to play the part of their profession, when it shouldn't be like that.

Musicians are musicians - Simple as that.

If anything is to blame its T.V mostly. Take a look at Kerrang!!, a recent success in rock styled music meant a success in THE rock channel and as that success grows and grows by the day I see more prats jumping around with masks on and trying to look like they are infact 'evil' or 'hard'.

It doesn't threaten me...

Maybe if we didn't have these forms of images, in this case videos, then maybe we would just 'listen' to the music, like music is meant to be heard and not watched.

People that dive into the recording studio screaming words of evil just don't do it for me, esspically the kind that even go on channels such as Kerrang!! trying to make it look as if it is 'The Hell Channel'. These people surely are only trying to make money out of the trend and I feel for those who sit and try and make the most melodic sounds for us to endevour and the most tasteful lyrics but get nowhere. These are the real musicians....

Looking evil may be sort of a wierd trend these days but you have to remember that trends die. But has rock music?
No.

Not all types of rock music sounds evil and theres no reason for trying to sound that way anyway, its all part of a trend. Its not just rock either, theres a whole host of other genres which set trends, bad and good.

If anything, looking 'evil' gives rock a bad name, in my mind anyway...
