The future of gaming, the forum name tells us that this is what it is all about, but how many of us have actually considered it and gave it enough thought.

Most of us are just happy to sit at home, plug in our PS2,Gamecube, XBox or whatever you like to play on, and so we should be. There is of course no point of looking in to the future and think what, when and where etc. Or is there?

Virtual reality has always been proclaimed as the way of the future for gaming, the creation of a virtual world that you can interact with. So maybe instead of just controlling a character in a game it could be possible to also control the environment in which you play.
I seen an imprssive piece of technology which hopefully soon one of my courses at uni will let me watch and possibly use myself.
It is used by architects to create a virtual town with streets etc and allow them to change buildings etc.

We have seen fully created towns and cities in games so this may not seem that impressive but with this technology when you walk the character walks etc. No control pad.

For gaming this could mean a new era of not just a console but a new environment which you strap on a suit or use sensors around the room to detect what you are doing.

Something I thought of a while back was a full game room, of course this means you need a totally empty room in the house but htink of what you could do.

All the walls painted white. The projection unit projects images on all four walls, sensors pick up your movements and special peripherals such as weapons wtc would be used to interact as well.

Obviously that is the basic idea, much more detail which I don't want to go into here is required, cost is the biggest problem not just for the technology to allow this but how many folk are going to firstly have a suitable room and secondly justify using it for solely this reason.

Maybe a replacement for the arcade? Have these rooms available to the public so they can walk in off the street and pay to play on them.
It is this last point that I think could be important for any drastic change we see, replace the arcade machines of present with virtual reality (if that is what the future holds of the next major change in gaming) just to see what is possible with the technology and also if people will actually use and enjoy it.

But virtual reality could be a long way off. Many wont want to pay the high costs to purchase the equipment so what else could we see.

Well what about more of the same. Technology is always improving steadily. There is a long way to go before we ever get the best out of what we can produce, there is always ways of making games better and no game can ever be discribed as "perfect".
So why not just keep making better games, new consoles every six years or so and keep making break throughs with great outstanding games in the same way that the likes of gran turismo and GTA3 have done.

This is the future I think we will see, no new fancy ways of playing, same old console and controllers with maybe a few nice new touches like movement sensors but nothing majorly different. Well not until most of us are older. I think it will be a good 15 years before anything drastically changes.
Afterall why change something that already seems to work well.
