There are, and have been Internet communities for years now, but interactivity between people has been minimal to say the least. They have been confined to text boxes and forums which really, at the end of the day are impersonal and a little on the slow side, but is the internet about to be altered forever, by the console market??

At the moment interactivity between people is at a minimum, your much more likely to be interested in the idea of being part of an online community, than you are the other people in that community, but soon hopefully the system will get a shock. With the advent of console gaming comes a unique opportunity to provide people with a means of entertaining each other and give an utmost lastability to their games. A portal where people can initially just chat away, but which can then be seperated into alternate interests, music games, movies and news can all be incorporated into a community.

At the moment, in a best case scenario, we have a limited supply of organisation on the internet. The industry is fragmented and commercial loyalties are more important than content. There is no central service or system where a whole community of like minded people can be easily provided with all the news, information and entertainment they can easily enjoy. Maybe at the moment, it's more of a design issue, than a lack of inginuity and common sense, but there is now an unprecendented opportunity for things to be set straight.

Imagine that you turn on your PS2 (only as an example, Xbox or GC can easily be substituted for any other console), and the main screen appears. On that screen there is an option to go to you internet portal. Once you are inside your portal, you have options, you can go to a chat area, and have an area where you can talk to like minded people on area which interest you. Once inside that area, you may wish to start any game of your choice with those people, so you decide to set up a little squad on FFXI and go on an adventure. When you get back, you kick back and listen to a fine internet radio station, set up and run by the games company, nice easy and simple. Your friends list starts flashing, it's a challenge, the latest round of the World Rally Championship is about to begin, and you are registered, time to get going.

In short, your games, your music and your friends are all easily accessible and instantly available. Massive online competitions and events are organised which you are more than willing to take part in. This is a vision of the future that some people don't believe in. Nintendo themselves are scepticle about the financial viability of such schemes, but nothing like this exists at this time. I think it's time the console industry pulled together and united the gaming community under one portal, it really is time that massive scale events and opportunities such as this began to take place, across platforms and across continents.

I interact with people on the Net all the time. Well, mostly it's just part of them, like a limb or flying ear...

On a more serious note:

Interactive is crap. I used to try this with avatars on my good PC. The speeds and the graphics were top notch, but it's just... crap. Unless you have voice comms there's no point, but even then, talking to someone you don't know is just crap. If it was people I know then it WOULD be good, but personally I prefer IRC.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
Brilliant service.
Love it, love it, love it!
