Think about it. The Playstation did a lot to increase the popularity of gaming and, in particular, introduce the casual gamer who would buy a cheap console and buy a few games a year, only playing on them occasionally. This coupled with good marketing made the console very popular indeed and made Sony a lot of money. Now think what will happen when the PS2 comes out. It will be £300 and the simple truth is that most people who play games, aged about 10-20, haven’t got the money to buy a PS2 and neither have their parents. Now imagine what will be the cheapest console on the market. The N64. When the PS2 comes out, Nintendo will almost certainly lower their prices drastically and so, when little Timmy asks his parents for a new console, they will automatically choose the cheapest one. So, while the PS2 will be mainly for the hardcore elite who can afford one, mainly aged over 20, Nintendo will be wooing the next generation of gamers with it’s cheap hardware and quality games provided by themselves and Rare plus a sizable back catalogue of good games. Also, I don’t know about you but I don’t want to trade in my trusty N64 just yet for an expensive new model with flashier graphics. If Nintendo are going to give N64 owners longer before they stop development for it, then I’m happy.
I can’t see the PSone surviving for long, simply because, as soon as the PS2 shows up, no good developers will want to make old Playstation games. Once existing PS owners have admired the smaller box and run all of their old games on it they will probably wonder why they shelled out for practically the same console twice.
When you add the fact that most kids are mad about Pokemon and that Nintendo will create as many Pokemon games it possibly can for the N64, then it seems like you have a surefire hit on your hands.
Of course Sony will have to drop the price of the PS2 eventally so Nintendo is probably being a bit ambitious if it thinks it can last until 2002 but by tehn all of the hype over the PS2 will have long since died down so Sony will have to stop relying on the success of it’s predeccessor and make sure that the PS2 is any good.
I hope Nintendo survive. Purely because they may not have as many games but the games that do come out for the N64 is of a consistently high standard. Let’s just hope that Nintendo don’t get tempted to follow Sony’s example and put quantity over quality.
Anyway, I’m done for now, if you’ve got anything to say on the matter please post a reply and let me know what you think.
