I know this might have been covered already but...How do I get DTS sound from DVD's on the PS2. It is connected to a Denon 1602 Amp which is set to auto. The PS2 is set up with an optical cable, optical output ON. On playing DVD, in settings have switched on Dolby and DTS. The Mummy & Mummy Returns say Dolby, 5.1, and DTS on the case but the sound just comes through in Dolby. Tried just setting DTS to on on the PS2 and the amp to only accept DTS but then no sound. Any ideas please.

My advice would be to get a magazine such as Home Entertainment - they feature all manner of Home Cinema kit.

If you're buying I would go to Richer Sounds. They do seperate kit but also all-in one packages (and their prices are significantly cheaper than Dixons/Comet etc).

So - either an all in one kit (Sony do some well rated ones for under £500 and it includes all you need).

Or get an Amp (which can decode Dolby Digital and DTS) plus a speaker kit and of course you'll need an optical lead - mine is a 2m one by gamester which I picked up for £8 recently.

For the easy option I'd recommend the all in one kit as it includes everything apart from the optical lead.
Also you'll get a DVD player as part of the unit so for convenience it's hard to beat.

If you're looking for a long term and better quality option then seperates is the way to go.

Either way - get a copy of Home Entertainment or What HiFi, you'll find out all kinds of things that you may have no idea about.

Alternatively feel free to contact me on the forums here or at [email protected]

ther are all in one packages available, available from Dixons/PC world and the like, but I'd go to a dedicated hifi shop like Richer Sounds.

If you are buying equipment for its sound quality, you can get much better sound quality in good hifi separates than tiny tinny speakerand indifferently produced cheapo amp/decoders.

an optical cable
a hifi amp which has dts 5.1 decoding,
4 hifi speakers
a shielded magnetically shielded centre speaker (if its near your tv, the shielding stops interference)
and a sub woofer

oh, get martial arts lessons to deal with your neighbours who come round to discuss why their house is shaking!

Excellent - and yes, DTS is regarded by most as being superior to Dolby Digital.

There is actually a technical reason for this and DTS is (something to do with the formatting/encoding) a 'better' soundtrack.

Anyway, it's working - that's the main thing.

Glad to have been useful.

Doh!!
You are right in the DVD menu there are language options for audio. Selected DTS 5.1 and success the sweet sound of theatre surround sound, even the dog jumped up and looked around the room.
I think it sounds better than Dolby Digital but that is most probably because of the struggle to get it sorted.
Thanks for you help..give the man a medal.

OK, I presume that you've actually selected the DTS soundtrack from within the DVD menu too?

Remember that if a DVD has Dolby Digital AND DTS you need to physically select the DTS soundtrack.

From the Main Mummy DVD menu there should be an audio or languages option - in there you should find the DTS soundtrack.

Saying that though - you don't have to try the DTS soundtrack it's just that a DTS soundtrack will not play at all on equipment that isn't outputting the signal or on an amp that can't handle dts.

As for the PS2 dvd menu, I can't tell you right now what mine is set to but you should be able to activate all of them and then whichever soundtrack you choose from within a DVD should work.

It may just be the point I said before - that you must physically select the DTS soundtrack from the Mummy Returns menu first.

Let me know - I know we can sort it!

Oh dear!!!
My amp has lights to show Dolby Digital or DTS input is being received.Played Mummy Returns DVD on PS2 and it shows the signal to be Dolby Digital.
Stopped DVD and changed audio settings to Dolby-off, DTS-on, Mpeg-off. Audio track auto select-Off.
No Dolby or DTS lights showing and sound is just in stereo (PCM 2 channel)
Tried with auto track set to ON as well still the same.
Then set up my amp to only accept input from a DTS source through the optical connection.
Played Mummy Returns on PS2.No sound.
In the PS2 manual it says the PS2 give priority to the audio with the most channels, if they are all the same then priority is given in the following order - PCM,Dolby Digital, DTS, & MPEG audio.
It also states "depending on the DVD the audio channel with priority may be pre-determined in which case you cannot give priority!!"
Have you got a copy of the Mummy or Mummy Returns as it could be the DVD. But why then state DTS on the packaging??
Help frustration setting in!!!

It's quite annoying actually to find that it's so awkward to activate the Digital sound when DVD's are the most common source for this on the PS2.

You know all too well the drama's with Dolby Digital & DTS soundtracks in games don't you Mr.Wookiee?!

Burnout anyone?.....
