i'm still building my monsterous pc, got most of the important pieces except for the cpu and motherboard, now, since the AMD XP chips have entered since I started this mission, Iwas wondering which motherboard is best, I'd like to get my mitts on an XP cpu :) *pants*

ok, I was set on the Asus266v (me thinks) I doubt thats right, just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this please :)

oh, i've got a pci gfx card, IDE hdd and i'm gonna use ddr ram, everything else is pretty much ok. Thanks in advance for your help

Heh, no problem. Icehole is just an adaptor to fit a 80mm fan in place of a 60mm on to a heatsink, it's overpriced, but looks pretty...you could get cheaper things to do the same job. I use this many fans partly because I overclock, so push more volts through the CPU and heat it up more, and partly to fill up the nice baybus on the front of my box..

I haven't fiddled about inside it for a while, I'll swap some fans around when I get my new hdd tomorrow..just because =)

No idea what the card, is, got the drivers, but havn't got round to checking it out yet, it's 3d, but not a GE2(i'll get a GE2+ when I get some more funding)

thanks, i'll check into that.

No idea, I havn't bothered looking into them really, i have no cpu so I can't judge this yet, I won;t buy it until i have the cpu, hhmm, shame about your XP chip ;)

I was going to get a Delta fan, but realised that my 300w power wasn't enough, so a themaltake is good, i'll get some more fanage to help out.

Icehole? um, surething, *packs bag for trip upto the Antarctic*

Or, if you're like ruari, use superglue..

heh, cool, don't think i'll try that.

also, I meant to saythis to you some time back, my parents pc, simple spec:

1.333Ghz AMD
256ddr ram
32mb GE2
120w psu (I think, maybe 150w)

anyway, it's using one fan (cpu) not including the psu fan, and it works great, temperatures good too.

just thought i'd say, since everyone talks about 4+fans, hhmm.

but, thanks you very much (once again) I feel i won't stop saying thankyou to you for some time to come.

Agh. Ok:

1) Get an AGP graphics card. Really. What model is it? I haven;t seen worthwhile PCI ones for a good while, and second hand AGP ones are fairly cheap..

2) I use an XP1600 on an Asus A7V266, and I've had no end of problems with it..like, the chip not actually running at the speed it should..it's not a problem with my CPU, I've heard from countless other people having the same trouble, and Asus haven't replied to any e-mails from any of us..

The A7V266-e seems ok, no bad reports, but is expensive if you don't need its extra features. The Epox 8KHA+ is a good board, nice set of BIOS options, takes DDR, and will take the Alpha 8045 heatsink, which is too big to fit on the A7V. It's also a good £30 cheaper, so a fairly sensible choice..

What HSF are you planning to use on this? My delta did an admirable job of cooling, but I couldn't put up with the noise, so I replaced it with a Thermaltake and shoved in a 120mm in the top top compensate a bit. The XPs generate a fair amount of heat, and I wouldn't really use it with temps hitting above 60C at load (despite them being rated higher, things tend to get a bit dodgy around here). May just be my paranoia, having burnt out one XP already and not wanting to do it again..

Oh yeah, that's another thing with the A7V, the temp probe on the CPU is very unreliable...often adds 10-15C on top of your actual temperature. I recommend an Alpha 8045 or a super SK6 heatsink, with either a nice 60mm fan - delta if you could bear it - or an 80mm with an icehole or suchlike to get to to fit on the heatsink.

Or, if you're like ruari, use superglue..
