Unfortunately it's become too late to get the US to change. They adopted .com very early in the development of the "commercial" internet and people are now familiar with .com = USA.
Any Global company, just as our own, would reserve all of the variations to cover their backs and to regionalise their locations.
We are officially a .co.uk firm, but the americans don't like this so we have a .com too (though after the homepage non of them have noticed that they are in a .co.uk domain?)..
My fave proposed on is .porn though I could suggest some others...
