Boredom?
There is a youth club that runs along side the estate, must nights it is practically empty. Most kids complain that the club is boring and not enough activities to keep them occupied. Youth leaders complain that lack of funds and members mean they cannot organise any new activities. With council budgets getting tighter it is facilities like this that get less funding, with the result that kids can find that excitement they crave out on the streets.
Parental Supervision?
A lot of kids are thrown onto the streets by parents who wish to have a quiet night in front of the TV or even go to the local pub for a few beers. The child is giving a couple of quid and told to be back at 10. What ever happened to the family sitting around the dining table enjoying each other’s company playing games or cards.
Drugs?
Drugs are a major problem amongst teenagers, with drugs been available as easy as buying a paper at the corner shop. Where does the money come from to but the drugs? From crime - housebreaking, stealing stereos from cars, shop lifting, running errands for the larger criminals. Once they have got the taste for the softer drugs most teenagers go on to a more powerful drug that will give them the same kick.
A lot of cases of vandalism go unreported, people are intimidated to report it, or they don’t think it is worth reporting. Police resources are already over-stretched and cases of vandalism must be a very low priority.
A "Bobby on the Beat" maybe an answer to the problem, but again extra resources would have to be made available for policing.
Well thats my view, what's yours?
