The car drove down the hill away from the the air field. Patterson sat back in his chair and for the first time for about a week relaxed. Jack peered over at him. For the first time he took in patterson features he was a tall man with a long face, brown hair and had a scar on his left cheek.
"where did you get such a fine scar from?" jack asked.
"i got a the way of a bayonet" patterson replied.
Sudenly the engine of the car seemed to grow louder, jack looked out of the back window.
"ah, it seems our friends at the airfield know who we are"
Patterson also looked behind and saw that two motor bikes with side cars were following them. Patterson reached down and opened one of jacks case he pulled out the browning. A burst of fire came from the side cars. It shattered the back windscreen. Patterson put the tripod legs on the parcel shelf and returned fire. His machine gun spat his hate. His shots blew apart the wind screen on the first sidecar, shards of glass flew every where. Jack had also opened fire his thompson hitting the driver of the second motor bike, the man fell off and the bike went off the road into a tree. Patterson had reloaded and shot again, he hit the patrol tank of the second motor bike and the whole thing blow up.
Jack turned to the driver in front and told him to speed up. To patterson surpise the driver answered in an unmistakable cockney accent. "i'm going as fast as i can, you better have not made a mess of my car"
"Where are we heading for jack?"
"The resistance base"
The car sped away in to the night.
