I don't think the Playstation 2s booming sales are anything to do with tech specs. Don't forget, the Playstation 2 had a huge market already established by the 'tres cool' Playstation. Though the loyalty is somewhat flippant, in terms of numbers it matches Nintendos troopers even today.
Don't forget, either, that the image-conscious teens choice was released a fair few months before the other next-gens.

Everyone knows that PS2s popularity has nothing to do with it's specs. I'd wager that 10s of millions of them were sold because they were the cool thing to own. Obviously, millions more have been sold on the basis of the software available, but the overall overpopularity is a result of good marketing and stupid people.
