I have exams at university right now and I really should be burried in the books studying. But as usual when you need to think about something other things always pop into your head and confuse you way too much. So as I sat reading through a JAVA textbook which was a tad boring various thoughts came to me. Now this post isn't a usual AliBoy style post, nope no new ideas for improving the gaming industry, no look at techniques or problems in the way games are made, sold and advertised. This post is me having a right good rant and moan all on one subject, Violence.

I know this has been done time and time again but the thought came to me and I needed to write something. It is all about violence in video games, films, books, tv. etc
It always causes some kind of outrage and fuss when a game is released that contains violent scenes or gorey images. Why? In my view the people who make comments and a fuss about it usually know very little about the industry. Like with games, when someone writes an article saying games are too violent they nine times out of ten will know very little about what they are talking about. Ok so some games are violent? So, games aren't just for young kids! If you look at nearly anything in the world there could be something which somebody out there will be able to say, "Oh that could cause somebody to ....".

If a game is deemed unsuitable for children then it is given a suitable rating of an 18 certificate. Which means it contains something which isn't suitable for children. Sometimes a parent may feel that they don't mind their child playing something that has been given an adult rating, and that is fine. Which brings me on to my next part.

It is the job of any parent to ensure that their child isn't watching, reading, playing or doing anything which they see as unsuitable. BUT sometimes it isn't possible to do this all the time, so you must educate and trust your child. A lot of people, especially some of the younger ones on these forums show a great deal of maturity and can work out for themselves what is right and what is wrong.

I got annoyed the other day when watching tv. Various people saying that Harry Potter the book was evil and that it encourages children to carry out acts of witch craft. WHAT? The biggest bunch of doggy poo that I had heard that day. Fine if that is your view then fine you are entitled to it, but don't force it on others and try get the book banned. If Harry Potter does encourage witch craft then surely all childrens fairy tales encourage some evil act? Is it just me or are some people out there taking things a little too serious?

The same day I was talking to my girlfriends boss who I am quite friendly with. He was telling me his son managed to get GTA3 and after he seen it he made him take it back. He then started going on about how games like that should be banned. Again he dosn't really know much about it. His son is 11, therefore it was illegal for him to get it in the first place and he probably did the right thing by taking it back. But why spoil it for the others? This game is enjoyed by thousands.

The way I see it is if something you are watching is to violent then don't watch it. If a book contains a hidden side to it like encouraging witch craft then stop reading it. If a game is unsuitable then stop playing it but don't go crazy about how it should be banned. I know many of you out there don't care as you know what is right and wrong and not to take things serious but for the small percentage out there who don't please take note!

I guess the same can be said for music, lyrics that make people commit suicide or act crazy. It isn't the lyrics that do this it is the person who does them. It is only music.

Which brings me to the last bit. A game, film, book or song dosn't make someone violent, they are already violent and they are just triggered by the film or book etc. Even if all violent material was banned they would still be triggered by something. Ok I think my rant is over. I don't expect many replies as this is just my opinion and there isn't really much to reply about.
