Someone has really got to shoot Owen Wilson! Or at least shoot the casting director for Behind Enemy Lines. Owen Wilson isn’t bad in a small role. He was okay in Armageddon and (so I’m told) Meet The Parents. But he cannot take the lead in a film! His voice is so annoying. After 5 minutes in the cinema, I felt like walking out because his voice was THAT annoying. Of course the thought of actually walking out never crossed my mind as firstly, I had paid five quid to get in and secondly, I hadn't seen Gene Hackman yet.

But anyway, enough of my whining…..for the moment. Behind Enemy Lines is a film where you can pretty much tell what happens from the poster or name. Man gets stuck behind enemy lines. Superior officer doing everything he can to get him out, but is told he cannot go in and rescue him by his superior officers. Owen Wilson is the guy trapped behind enemy lines and Gene Hackman is the guy trying to save him.

Back to a bit of my whining. As I say, Wilson’s voice is more than annoying. It’s infuriating. Thankfully though, his only real lines of dialog are right at the beginning. After that, all he really does is run away from people with big guns. And then in the end he is just running away from one person with a REALLY big gun - a gun which I would love to own. Whenever he gets on the radio, that surge of anger swells up inside of you again, but he is usually only whispering so it isn’t THAT bad.

The beginning is a good start to the film and a bad start to Owen Wilson. You hear his voice first you see and already you can only see him in the role of his Armageddon part (well that’s all I could see him as anyway). The scene with the plane and missiles is brilliant. It probably lasts around 5 to 10 minutes but then they crash and Wilson starts to talk again. AARRGGHH! After the crash scene and the scene that follows, all that really happens is Wilson runs away from people who want to kill him and Gene Hackman shouts at a lot of people. But he shouts in style I might add. :-D

If it was a Michael Bay film then he would have found many moments for a chance to slip in some corny lines and actions. Thankfully though, the real director has gone against this, bar a few shots in the later stages of the film when your spine does tingle a little. But nothing on Bay’s standards of corny moments.

There are still some really stupid moments in the film though. For example, a man steps on a land mine and freezes, then asks his companion for help. The mine hasn’t clicked back yet so it obviously hasn’t exploded. He asks again for help but his companion pulls a gun and says ‘Don’t move’. Then he starts to back away. Now there are 2 problems here. The first being that I don’t think the guy is planning on moving anyway. The second being that his companion is obviously trying to save himself and the guy on the mine knows he is gonna die anyway. They don’t like each other so you can’t help but feel he would just step off the mine and take the other guy with him. A couple of minutes later, you here a big boom. Did he get bored? He was standing on there for a matter of minutes as far as I could tell. Either that or the director did a p***-poor job of showing that a lot of time had passed.

It is the last scene however, which ruins the film! All the way through, there is no silly action of the John Woo style. 10 minutes from the end however, Wilson slides across some ice, foot held high to look like an ‘action man’, firing his 9mm and hitting a guy with basically every shot. These guys have AK-47s and are constantly firing yet they fail to hit even the ice around him. Bad enough, but bare in mind he was shot with a high calibre rifle a few minutes before hand, and the scene just got a whole lot worse. Then he runs off the edge of a cliff and grabs a marine’s hand who has been lowered from a helipcopter. He has been shot in the shoulder with a really big gun for Christ’s sake! There is not a chance in hell that he could hold on.

Still, overall the film’s not too bad. Great start, ordinary middle and dire end! So it’s ordinary then. Nothing special. Could have been a lot better. Go see Spy Game instead. It is FAR better.

Oh and has anyone shot that guy who cast Owen Wilson yet? :-D

No it wasnt stupid...they were also firing at the other guys come to rescue him and the copters. And training does count, as the Gulf War proved.

I thought it was pretty good. Okay, it isnt 100% realism but if you want that go watch the news ! It shows the dangers faced by pilots, the atrocities of the Balkan conflicts, the war crimes and had a semblance of a story too. The final scene with the mass firefight isnt as stupid as it seems - it is militia versus the most highly trained soldiers in the world after all....

If you want to see a war film, and cant wait until Black Hawk Down, then its worth the admission fee.

I saw Behind Enemy Lines today. It was the worst film I have seen since I saw a film that was worse than it. It was absoloutely terrible. It is a must not see for anyone that is going to see a film in the near future!
