If you thought Mario Golf was fun, you need to check out Mario Tennis 64! The Mario sports franchise just keeps getting bigger and better, and if this game does as well as expect, you can bet Mario Soccer, Mario Track and Field, and Mario Curling won't be far down the line.
One can't help but be a little impressed. The cartoon world of Mario intertwined with the game of tennis. Regardless of whether you're a tennis pro or a newbie on the court, I think everyone will have some fun with this one.
The graphics in Mario Tennis 64 look incredible. Nintendo is especially hyping the special effects, comparing playing the game to watching a laser light show. Don't be fooled by the cartoony look and Mario-style antics, though; beneath the cute exterior you'll find a realistics physics engine calculating the perfect speed and trajectory of every racket hit.
Mario Tennis 64 features 16 different characters, including some that we've never seen before. Along with standards like Mario and Bowser is Waluigi, Wario's brother. Apparently, Waluigi has always been jealous of Luigi's fame and prestige in the gaming industry. This just might be his best bet at humiliating Luigi...
Mario Tennis 64 allows players to play cooperatively or against one another. In Tournament play two to four players can duke it out simultaneously!
You won't be limited to just traditional tennis games, though. In the Ring Shot mode, you'll get to hit tennis balls through golden rings, and be scored based off game time, ball and points. The object will be to get as many tennis balls as possible through the rings with minor variations.
The controls in Mario Tennis 64 are very true to life. After positioning yourself to hit the ball, you'll power up your swing by pressing a button and then press it again to complete your hit. The position of your Control Stick will determine what kind of hit you deliver, whether it's a lob, a passing shot or a spike.
You'll also need to familiarize yourself with playing both front and back courts. While this might prove difficult at first, it will bring something to multi-player games that's definitely needed: no split screen.

Sorry, but the tennis genre just doesn't have that playability that I like, the gameplay being fatally flawed by the fact that you cannot really shoot your opponent or cast a spell on them to make them double fault by turning into a toad each time it is their turn to spell.

As for Mario Tennis, well, let's just say that if Mario appears in a game it is flawed, full stop.
