It's pretty simple to work out. All the possible answers have the same symbol so it'll always work. It also changes the symbols each time you play.
For instance, numbers 99 down to 90 will always equal 81 in the end. 89 to 80 will always equal 72 etc.

If you notice, by trying any number between 10 and 19, you get back a 9 (when you move from 10 to 11, you're increasing your number to be subtracted from by 1, and the number to subtract by 1 until you change the leading 1 to a 2, ie, 20).
If you go up to 20-29 you get 18. Then 30-39, it's a 27.
Try it further and I imagine you just keep going up the 9 times table.
Note that all the numbers in the 9 times table have the same symbol even though it changes on refresh :)

The symbols are repeated, if you look at the symbols they appear more than once. It's quite a clever thing for whoever made it, but quite easy to figure out. Look how often the arrow pointing north-west appears.
