For many console gamers, even in an age where technology is so prominent, the thought of broadband gaming is some small, dormant, future-event rarely reflected upon. But is it that far away? And are so many people oblivious to it?

To answer the last question, I’d have to give a straight ‘Yes’. Although it is a reality in the PC world, broadband gaming for console gamers is a bit of a fairytale... except to those who also use PC’s!

But it’s the first question I’m more interested in.

I honestly don't think Broadband Console Gaming (BCG, for this post) is that far off! I mean look where Internet Broadband is now... you can get it for £25 a month, it doesn't clog-up the phoneline and it's all done through the TV (Telewest Version) and everyone has a TV. Almost. Those who have a console do, anyway!

Now, although this might be expensive for quite a few families; A 'deal' with Microsoft or Sony would halve that price. You would probably get a free connection upon purchasing the HDD or signing a BCG Connection Contract. So in reality, the price won't be much of a problem.

I was talking to my friend who has recently had BB installed at home. He said that it's all done through the television lines.

Now think about Sky Television. (This is not an advert) It connects to the phone-line and it has an aerial. If BB is done through the TV, then surely SKY Digital would be able to act as either a server, or at least a connection device.

The future will tell. There may even be a 3rd party company that invents a box that supports GC, PS2 and X-Box connection - multi-platform play? I think Pace (Maker of Sky Boxes) would be a good candidate.

I know this is a vague post, but it is open to opinions and discussion. I just think that with Broadband being as cheap as it is, and even cheaper if someone were to strike a 'deal' - and the way Sky TV is going, we could see a connection form that could even see us playing on-line in Autumn!

BCG gets different reactions from different people. Some want it, some don't care. One thing that i'm sure of, is that it's coming sooner than expected... i'm talking months. Digital Television and ever decreasing BB prices are only the start, but I have a feeling that they'll be the key players that get the ball rolling!

If you have any opinions on the subject, feel free to post them!

Thanks!

Poor poor Game... lighten up! It was just a joke! And I did back it up anyway.

Sure, broadband gaming will come as soon as the Xbox/Boadband Adaptor is launched. It will no way be more widespread than PC broadband and it'll be nothing like the scale you're talking about. With so few people's homes with BB available and even less with it installed, BB-only gaming will be pretty poor, because you might only find about 20 people wanting to play your game on your server at any one time.

Well, here's a FACT. You're an idiot.

What I gave was an opinion. And instead of putting me down, you could have explained why you think Broadband Gaming is further away than I do.

In fact, I bet you're wrong anyway... Broadband Gaming will come sooner than you think. Even if it has quite a low key launch.

Idiot.

Idiot.

Idiot.

...which is a shame for the Xbox, because we all know what that contains!

It looks like the PS2 might be the only realistically online console this time round.

I agree with Turbo, we wont be seeing BB on our consoles in this generation on any sort of scale.

I have an opinion: You don't know much about broadband.

PC and Gaming broadband are identical and share identical problems. One of them is not cost. Although £25 is expenive by European standards, it's still not really expensive and is the same price as a phone line and 24/7 dialup access, so it's all in all a pretty good deal.

The PROBLEM is availability, which is currebtly hovering around 5%. Also nither Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo can solve this problem because the companies are basically working as fast as they can.

BB for consoles AND PCs on a playable scale is a long, long way off. One thing it is not is "coming soon", or "soonish". I reckon we'll be in the next generation before BB is the norm, or even available to a decent percentage.
