What are your top five RAWK albums? I need to have a think about this....
70s/80s
Van Halen - Van Halen
They've been corporate rock bores for ages now, but this still stands up today.
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Drunken boogie rock at it's best.
Metallica - Master of Puppets
James Hetfield is obviously an immensely talented bloke. Shame he's wasted it lately.
Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime
Fantastic concept album, intelligent lyrics, and it still managed to rock.
King's X - Out of the Silent Planet
Sounds dated (but still great) today, but at the time the guitar sound was incredible.
90s +
Warrior Soul - Last Decade, Dead Century
Again, intelligent lyrics, and a great songwriting talent that never got acknowledged in the mainstream.
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Drug influenced album, with big riffs (Them Bones in particular is huge).
Filter - Title of Record
If you like dynamics, this is great stuff.
Fu Manchu - King of the Road
Takes Priest, Hawkwind and Sabbath, and creates an album that's almost one big riff from start to end.
The Workhorse Movement - Sons of the Pioneers
Would have been huge if they hadn't split up. The first band since Faith No More to really mix styles to come up with something unique.
Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun & Sky Valley
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverence
Tool - Aenima/Lateralus/Undertow
Metallica - Master of Puppets (just for some old skool)
Oh yes.
Pantera "Vulgar Display of Power".
Pure. Unadulterated. Metal.
Slayer "Reign in Blood"
For "Angel of Death" "Necraphobic" "Reign in Blood" and the single greatest rock riff ever written.
Tool "Lateralus"
They make most bands sound like drunk uncles dancing at weddings. On a whole other level.
Clutch "Pure Rock Fury"
Because it's called "Pure Rock Fury" and it has songs like "Who wants to rock?" "Smoke Banshee" and "Sinkemlow"
Helmet "Meantime"
The original stop-start-riff band.
