Many english words are derived from Latin. Often these words follow the same patterns as words in English do. Let me give you an example:
fons, fontis = fountain
mons, montis = mountain
see, there's a pattern.. BUT
pons, pontis = bridge??!!
seems like somebody made a transcription error. So what I'm trying to tell you is that you should be calling bridges POUNTAINS because that's what Latin tells us. And it surely has to tell us something otherwise they wouldn't teach the subject...
