OK, so what happened to VR then? The nice glove things that we would point with and fondle things with, those comfortable 3 kilogramme shades that we could swivel our heads around in, those all encasing rubber suits with the sensors in all the right places.....oops, maybe that was just my idea, forget that one.

The point is, virtual reality research seems to have spawned a few early spin-offs (motion capture and, er....)
and then died a death. What happened to that predicted future where we would all be prancing around a darkened room suited up to the nine's in black rubber coveralls with overlarge pointy gloves and big helmets, looking like Tai Chi experts with severe muscular problems?

What happened to finally getting to grips with Lara, or a one on one with Claire from Res Evil? Perhaps the military decided this technology was too empowering for us mere mortals and canned further research, perhaps Bill Gates bought up all the patents for his own sordid ends, or perhaps there are an awful lot of fun parties at Sony HQ that we never get invited to.

My point is, why did all the hype about virtual reality interfaces never go anywhere? What has happened to it? Where did it go? Your comments will be gratefully received.

That's a very good point actually. A good 5 or 6 years ago there was VR all over the place, and though it was fairly basic, if work on it had been continued right up to the present day, judging by the rate of advancement everywhere else it could have reached a surreally real level by now (all be it at a great cost). Even if not marketing it could have been a great show case for various companies tallents at shows such as E3, etc.

As far as I am aware, VR is still used in archetecture and building design. The VR company responsible for all those dodgy arcade cabinets with headsets has gone bust due to poor sales and lawsuits over dizzyness and headaches, although I saw two of the cabinets in San Antonio (Ibiza)

In my opinion, the ISP is the best I have ever used. They guarantee 'first time connection - everytime', which they have never let me down on.
