The point is, virtual reality research seems to have spawned a few early spin-offs (motion capture and, er....)
and then died a death. What happened to that predicted future where we would all be prancing around a darkened room suited up to the nine's in black rubber coveralls with overlarge pointy gloves and big helmets, looking like Tai Chi experts with severe muscular problems?
What happened to finally getting to grips with Lara, or a one on one with Claire from Res Evil? Perhaps the military decided this technology was too empowering for us mere mortals and canned further research, perhaps Bill Gates bought up all the patents for his own sordid ends, or perhaps there are an awful lot of fun parties at Sony HQ that we never get invited to.
My point is, why did all the hype about virtual reality interfaces never go anywhere? What has happened to it? Where did it go? Your comments will be gratefully received.
