Why do film makers insist on trying to glorify PC's. Have any directors ever used a PC? Do they know what Windows looks like? From what I've seen, probably not.
Example no.1 - Hackers
Quite a long time ago, 1996-97 I would guess, maybe a bit earlier because Pentiums hadn't come out yet. Anyway that's not important. First of all there is the stupid file that, when you open it up all this weird stuff happens on screen, loads of psychedelic cool stuff, which was dumb enough. But then the OS. The whole 'flying around the computers filing system' just made me laugh. And then, and this is brilliant, in the final part of the film, when they try to get to the file by hacking in, and one by one the super computer knocks them out. There is a great line, something like "I'm too far away [insert name here] will have to do it". Too far away? Too far away from what? Not the keyboard, maybe the scroll bar on the directory listing is really long? You see because they 'fly' around this directory, it would take too long to get there. Classic.
Example no.2 - Swordfish
I had the [ahem] pleasure of seeing this film just before Xmas, and I realise not many people did because of it's removal after September 11th, so basically, again this is a hacking story. But here we have super-hacker bloke, and he has super-hacker computer. Which includes about 7 screens, placed in no apparent formation, surrounding him. It all looks very cool, and almost believable, but then he has to write a worm to do the hacking. And this was the stupid bit. Its like he's doing a rubrics cube or something. No code, just lots of funny graphics with blocks joining together and then falling apart. Now, I'm doing an IT degree, so I realise this is not realistic, but my friends were coming out of the cinema laughing about it too. They thought it was ridiculous too.
Example no.3 - Bad Boys
As much as it pains me to do this, cos I love this film, the end scene, where they are tracking the bad guys mobile phone is just soooo funny. That must have been chucked in at the last moment. Its the same CG sequence, run about 3 times, and looks like it was made in about 5 minutes.
So my point, (yes I do have one) is....why try to glamorise computers. Everyone knows what Windows looks like, so have an OS which looks possible, not one that no-one can relate to. Films today are all about realism. So make them realistic. Don't have some sort of competition to come up with the weirdist computer system!
