I hate Stereotypes…. I doubt many like them but my particular distaste is that for a long time you couldn’t brand me anything. I was a weirdo, a nutter… and I like these stereotypes because there isn’t a stereotypical weirdo… you are just different. Now meanwhile I can ‘apparently’ be put in groups, how can I be called a traditional geek? Sure I play loads of games and write about them on the internet, that is, hands-up and confess, geeky, but I also go to parties several times a week, I’m in a large social group, I go to the pub (much like most of you lot)… these are not traits of a geek. So surly I’m simple a regular guy with a slightly unusual obsessive hobby? My dearest friend Helen once said to me ‘typical male’… she’ll get out of hospital in 2-3 weeks.

Now if I hate pathetic every day stereotypes like that how does Nintendo cope with the constant criticism that they are a computer game company for kids. It is a stereotype that is so very very wrong, there is no typical geek, there is no normal male… and Nintendo are not just a console for children. This isn’t a post about whether Nintendo are a console for the younger generation or not, we’ve been there too many times before. But you know the arguments… this March, April and May the Gamecube’s biggest games are an Online RPG (PSO), Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 0, Hitman 2, Super Monkey Ball 2, Def Jam Vendetta, Splinter Cell, Burnout 2 and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. So for the big pre-summer release list Nintendo have a total of 2 smash hit games that can be perceived as childish… both of which me a 17 year old will be getting in one way or another. And yet the stereotypical viewpoint will remain for the next several years until Nintendo start advertising their adult games as much as their childish ones.

Poor old Sony, even today is criticised for lack of originality… whatever. Naturally if you have a sequel to a million-seller it will make a bit more money and get more coverage and advertisement than a new game on the Playstation. But just like Nintendo isn’t a children’s company, the PS2 isn’t a sequel system. Ico is evidence of pure ingenuity; it is strikingly original, as was the first SSX game. Even GTA 3, something that will probably feature every year, was a highly original in what it tried to do… it is a legendary as some of the best Nintendo games. GTA has had so many games base itself around it, Mafia, True Crime, The Getaway… sure they all have their own twists and turns but they all have a lot to thank GTA for. Next year you will see even more original games from Sony and their band of troops, some of which like Burnout, Red Faction and SSX before it will spawn new series’. So what of this crappy stereotypical view point? I hate stereotypes, nothing is, as it seems nothing is ever that predictable.

Poor old Microsoft, they suffer more stupid stereotypes than anyone simply due to the brand name. But one stereotype I strongly reject is that Microsoft is just like the Playstation with better graphics. Yes Hitman 2, Halo, Splinter Cell etc… are all Playstation Esq. realistic titles but Microsoft has their own brand and style of gaming. Whilst Nintendo are very much an Eastern company with a large collection of western games, Sony are the exact opposite but Microsoft are a different kettle of fish. Yep they are a western games company and so the constant barrage of shoot ‘em ups, racers and sports games are inevitable but Microsoft’s own brand and style is through Sega, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Panzer Dragon Orta and Blinx is all part of this style Microsoft are developing for themselves. Come this time next year and I’ll add to that list as Microsoft hasn’t developed an obvious style yet… but you didn’t expect them too in a year did you? Yes Microsoft are relying on first rate third person games as their Games Studio’s and companies pledging allegiance get the games ready. Microsoft games are like a cross-bread between Western games and Eastern games (Blinx is a prime example). In actual fact think RARE games and you’ll get a good idea of Microsoft’s style. The stereotype that Microsoft is a poor mans Sony is a very harsh and un-true one.

Do you know why these Stereotypes exist? Advertisement. Nintendo always advertise their biggest selling titles far more than their adult ones. Mario and Pikmin got the most advertisement in Europe and although the Americans got a comprehensive adult advertisement campaign at the end of last year Nintendo do push their younger games more than others. I’d expect Metroid to be pushed heavily in Europe but do you see 2 free games coming with that one? Nope the younger look AAA title Zelda released 2 months later will receive much more hype, pre-order deals and advertisement space than Metroid. If Nintendo showed off the Resident Evil franchise more than Pokémon then maybe the stereotype will change… but they haven’t and it won’t. Sony do not advertise their original titles too much, James Bond, FIFA, GTA, The Getaway… other than The Getaway it is the sequels that you will see splashed across your screens… Ico wasn’t advertised too well although differently and it is really disappointing to see original games getting overlooked for advertisement space. Microsoft have only be around a year, they haven’t developed too many of their own style yet, so they advertise the third party games… the Sony style ones. It is a sad day when people are unable to look past stereotypes… and I hate them so much.

As Helen would say “shut it you overweight Nintendo fan boy” and indeed I will… but not before shutting her up.

In the words of Blur
'there must be more to life than stereotypes...'
If only people would look past the stereotypes as you said, and focus on the games instead then the world would at least be rid of school playground arguements like 'Xbox sux because its bigger than my house',
'gamecubes for kiddies', 'ps2 is soooooo old its poo'....

and then the world would be a better place (not quite)

I get called a 'mosher' because of my hair - but I really don't care. The same with my games - as long as tyhey keep briging great ones out which entertain me, I don't care about no image, and neither should you.

No go and read my post. Shoo!
